When it comes to objectives, conflicts are inevitable. In fact, conflicting objectives can lead to failed or lost goals and are often the result of clashing aspirations and diverging mental models. One common source of conflict is the difference between short-term and long-term perspectives. While short-term objectives may seem more attractive in the moment, they often come with greater costs in the long run. This is true for both shareholder and stakeholder value. While prioritizing shareholder value may seem like the best option in the short term, it can lead to disastrous consequences for all stakeholders in the future. The Deep Water Horizon and Fukushima disasters, as well as other incidents, have shown the dangers of prioritizing short-term shareholder perspectives over long-term societal aspirations. However, giving more attention to stakeholder value can ultimately benefit shareholders in the long run. In fact, in case of a conflict between shareholder and stakeholder values, it's always a matter of "pay me now or pay me later," paying later often being the more expensive option. That's why Total Respect Management's philosophy of considering all stakeholders to find the most sustainable path forward is crucial. By investing in stakeholder objectives, companies can bring profit in the long run, while boosting shareholder value in the short run will ultimately generate the opposite. 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝘆: Companies are not including nature in their sustainability approaches, or at least not strategically, as they focus on climate primarily as the primary lever. When there are nature efforts, many businesses manage them separately. This persists despite the clear direction from global authorities that climate and nature are fundamentally intertwined. At the same time, company stakeholders from investors to citizens increasingly demand better performance and disclosures from businesses. Company boards need to prepare for their enhanced obligations when it comes to connecting climate and nature in their actions. Nature needs to be embedded into the company strategy and business models, and ensure that proper governance supports the objective. #regeneration #supplychain #sustainability 

All big business talks about the need for new partnerships to enable change...... and yet nothing changes in the supply chain. Welcome to this weeks #provocativetuesday We all know we need to do things differently to create a new outcome. And yet the type of partnerships, or more specifically need to form are still lacking. At best in many examples we have a 10% weighting for sustainability in new contracts. This may seem like a step in the right direction, but in truth you are transferring the burden to your supply chain. To the companies that are smaller, leaner, and typically have to swallow the financial transition to remain competitive or compliant. If you want to form partnerships for change, they need to be balanaced, they need to share the burden, and they need to be honest. One quick way to restructure this is by bigger businesses committing to multi-year engagements (rather than typical short-term) with your suppliers. By securing a longer term financial engagement, elements of your value chain can plan, and invest in the change for a sustainable future. Moreover by forming relationships rather than transactions, you can set mutual #KPIs that support #NETZERO and #Climate ambition, and not just financial ones.
