<Personal post> Our local news featured my daughter, Sana Shah’s FIRST Robotics team, Flaming Chickens from Catlin Gabel School. The team recently competed at the World Robotics Championships in Houston after winning the Pacific Northwest championship among 127 teams. Overall, they emerged as the top 3% of the 3000+ teams worldwide (their personal best). What’s unique about their 70-person team is that high school students entirely design, fabricate, and program the robot. No 'adult' mentors can touch the robot. This self-imposed rule often can be a disadvantage in matches, but the learning experience is unmatched. Sana Shah is the co-president and the software manager of the team (the 70-person team is run like a company by the students). This year, she ended up working more on design (CAD). Proud of the team and my kiddo. Thanks kindly to the robotics director Kevin Forbes, coach Dale Yocum. Dean Kamen and the FIRST volunteers have started a robotics revolution in schools through the FIRST program. Sana or I would be happy to talk if you have a kid in elementary through high school and would like to learn about this program. Not only did the Flaming Falcons (the AABC Robotics Team) recently secure its first sponsor, but they did so entirely on their own. From researching local businesses, to drafting, critiquing, and finalizing a solicitation e-mail, to meeting with business owners, these Learners did everything without the help of an adult. At such a young age (12-14) these Learners are practicing skills that shall help them no matter what path they choose to travel in life. The stage/field is set. It’s up to the teams to be ready. I’m at the world robotics championships in Houston this week watching my daughter’s team compete. I’ve got NO CLUE what these kids are doing, and have done, to make these pieces of craftsmanship do such extraordinary things. But as I watch, I see the parallels in both of my businesses. Incentives: if you want the experience/trip to go flawless, you better have experts doing the work behind the scenes. You don’t just show up to the beach and make it happen. Merchant services/Card processing: there’s a major difference in your processes and your processing. What are you doing to ensure your processing makes the best use of your processes, and what are your processes when your processing fails? Letting others take the reins takes most of us out of our comfort zone, mainly because we “feel” that we lose control. Watching these “pros” do their work provides a sense of relief. Is the stage properly set for your team to do their best work?
