💓 The Role of Hospice in Cardiac Care 💓 Hospice can significantly enhance the care provided by cardiologists, particularly for patients nearing the end of life. Here’s how: Improved End-of-Life Care: Cardiologists ensure patients are prepared for hospice care, including managing decisions around implanted devices and medications. Enhanced Symptom Management: Hospice can alleviate heart failure symptoms like pain, breathlessness, and anxiety, providing comfort and improving quality of life. Family Satisfaction: By addressing both patient and family needs, hospice care improves overall satisfaction during this difficult time. Better Communication Skills: Hospice training helps cardiologists engage in discussions about important decisions, such as device deactivation, fostering better communication and shared decision-making. Some signs a patient may benefit from cardiac hospice care include more frequent ER visits, increased hospital stays, shortness of breath, and growing difficulty with daily tasks. #CardiacCare #HospiceCare #EndOfLifeCare #HeartHealth #PalliativeCare #QualityOfLife #CompassionateCare #HeartFailure #PatientCare

ICU and Palliative Care: Poles Apart or a Mindset in Common? "All this got me thinking… how do we make the perceived value of excellent end-of-life care equal to that of the neat and tidily charted, all-pumps-in-a-row care of the highly dependent ICU patient? For the intensive care entrenched, there is something so entirely different about removing extraneous equipment, turning off unnecessary monitoring and forsaking the hallowed ICU chart. I feel sometimes that these actions appear to disconnect us from our patient, as if some imaginary ICU umbilical cord has somehow been severed." - Sophia Henderson @sophjhenderson x/Twitter For those of you interested in the relationship between intensive care and palliative care, here is one of many blogs from the Palliative Care & Intensive Care Blog Collection of the European Association for Palliative Care.

I’m a doctor who’s on a mission to keep you out of the ICU → Best Selling Author | Podcast Host | Public Speaker | Founder of Solving Healthcare Media and the Resource Optimization Network | Order my book! 🔗⬇️
“What should I expect when my loved one is going to die?” As a palliative care/ICU doctor, I've been asked this question many times. Often, we will have that conversation with families where we're at the point where the patient is more likely to suffer than benefit if we continue treatment. So we focus on comfort. And allow our patients to pass peacefully. The question is, what does that look like? Every situation is different, but for the most part, when we know that what our primary objective is (comfort) patients will die peacefully. In the ICU, for example 1. We will reduce the work of a ventilator 2. We will wean off or slowly titrate off any medications that are supporting their blood pressure 3. At the same time we bring in some medications to make sure that they feel no pain 4. Ensuring they feel no shortness of breath 5. We give them medication to take away any anxiety or worry… All of this is to ensure they don't suffer. Typically, the patient will look more and more like they're falling asleep. Their respirations will become more shallow, and they'll become further and further apart, and they'll look peaceful. As a physician, this is a special time. Being with families and patients to help them navigate through such hard circumstances is a blessing because you're in their world. You learn about Uncle Tommy, and what he was doing at dinners at Thanksgiving. And Aunt Nancy who was kicked out of school for being a rebel. You share in the laughs and in that experience and you get to see the human side. And so when it does come to end-of-life care, it will be peaceful, as long as the goal is comfort as a clinician. It’s challenging but it’s so rewarding. Because you know how hard it is, and you know what you’re doing is so incredibly impactful. If this resonates with you.
