As more talk about nature and business in broad context, we should also understand more sustainable #trail #management practice in Hong Kong Hong Kong has 40% covered as country parks, some of the world-class trails and trail runners. However, for those that hike, it’s not hard to see concrete paved path or stairs along trails. For a first thought, concrete seems convenient, but it comes with problems: removing topsoil to build, surrounding soil errosion, bad for knees, ruining natural landscape, and most importantly getting more unpopular among hikers. The HKSAR Government is doing both practices. On one hand, AFCD is conserving trail with #natural #materials like stones and wood; on the other hand, works departments are more considering #concrete and recently “environmental wood” (https://lnkd.in/gS2jv6jv) that blends with plastic in renovation projects. some citizens and groups are concerned and coming together to advocate more nature-based trail management practices, as they would help maintain attractiveness and sustainability of trails in Hong Kong. It was a pleasure to attend the first University of Technology Sydney Global Game Changers event – Green Infrastructure and Cities 4.0.   Organised by Jua Cilliers and facilitated by Anthony Burke it was an interesting evening learning about the importance of green infrastructure and its role to support net zero, beautiful and healthy communities.   With 7 seconds looking at the ocean making you feel better, and a tree lined street adding at least $50k to a property value, we inherently know the value of nature and green infrastructure (whether we think about it or not).   In Australia over 73% of us now live in cities – making green infrastructure even more important.   There were some great points shared, here are a couple from each panellist:   Rob Stokes – “What is in everyone’s interests collectively is not in everyone’s interests individually. Culturally we have a history of ignoring the Aboriginal people and this involves ignoring nature as well – we can learn a lot from connecting with Country on how to protect our green infrastructure from our Traditional Custodians.”   Remy Sietchiping – joined online from Kenya. “Our society has turned the benefits of nature into consumerism and this has come at a cost. In some cultures nature is not ‘good’ and nature based solutions are not easy to relate to. Many cities are not designed to plant more trees, we need to bring nature into the city in a predicable way.”   Jua Cilliers – “Nature is too good to be true. If we knew how good it is we wouldn’t believe it. We need to pick up the pace.”   Nature is not a luxury, it is necessity. Singapore's success in developing green infrastructure between old and new buildings can be attributed to various factors, including strong government policies, urban planning initiatives, public awareness campaigns, and incentives for sustainable development. Hong Kong faces different challenges, such as limited space, a dense urban environment, and a high population density. Additionally, the pace of development and the existing infrastructure in Hong Kong may pose obstacles to implementing similar initiatives. However, Hong Kong is actively working towards sustainability goals, and there are ongoing efforts to enhance green spaces, promote energy efficiency, and adopt environmentally friendly practices in urban development. It may take time, but progress is being made.

From modern office spaces to energy-efficient public buildings, the city is taking important steps to be more sustainable. Some key projects include: 🏢 Alchemia Business Center – LEED Platinum certified, incorporating advanced energy-saving systems, sustainable water management, and eco-conscious materials. 🏢 Olivia Business Centre – BREEAM-certified, emphasizing energy efficiency and sustainable transport.
