We launched a cost-saving product that’s projected to save our company a whopping $15 million! 💰🎉 It feels fantastic to contribute to such significant savings, but now I’m left wondering... What kind of rewards can we expect for this achievement (if any)? I’d love to hear from anyone who’s been in a similar situation. Here are a few things I’m curious about: Did you receive any rewards? What percentage of the savings did you get recognized for? Was it in the form of bonuses, promotions, or something else? 🤔 I imagine it could vary quite a bit depending on the company culture and policies, but it would be great to learn from your experiences! A few things I'm considering: How does my company typically reward innovative ideas? Is there a company-wide recognition that could come our way? Are personal rewards inconsistent, or do they often align with the amount saved? I’m really eager to see if our contribution to the company’s bottom line will lead...

Oct 10th 2024 "If you have a dumb incentive system, you get dumb outcomes.” The late Charlie Munger was endlessly quotable, but this pearl of pith from the famed investor is one that every manager should remember. ... A second study ... tested the effects of making co-operativeness a formal job requirement. Expectations of being helpful to colleagues were added to the job descriptions and performance appraisals of engineers working in a research-and-development (r&d) centre at a chemicals company in East Asia. (A second r&d centre in the company acted as a control.) Surveys of affected employees found that the motivation to help changed once it was part of the job, from an intrinsic drive to be co-operative to a desire to show off to the higher-ups. The type of help that people offered their colleagues changed as a result: there were more frequent instances of helpful behaviour but the quality of assistance that people actually gave each other went down. “How can I help as long as it doesn’t involve too much effort?” is a very watery form of collaboration.
