I wrote my book out of passion and a deep sense of frustration and also, love for my students and their strong, funny, idiosyncratic personalities and potential. Often, wasted and corrupted potential. What I've noticed, since releasing the book, is that some amazing people like Dr. LisaLee Egbert step forward and champion it, out of their own deep sense of passion and frustration. Oh my gosh. I did not expect to feel more connected to the human race, to gain new heroines, like her and Rosemary Wannis, Tracey Leigh Sweetapple, Jennifer Alford, Molly Glass, Mel Whalen and so many others; to gain both fury at how common the issues I saw and experienced and wrote about are, or hope, because my fellow humans are so bad-ass, hard-working and pro-active. We Deaf people are popping up on TV, video games, movies, social media. But in schools and doctor's offices, the legacy of oppressive ignorance continues. (Well, not this Dr!) Although Precision ABA is an ABA therapy company, all employees found ABA along their career journey. We have backgrounds in teaching, psychology, special education, medicine, and child development. So how did we all get to the field of ABA? If we break it down, what all these fields and ABA have in common is that they revolve around people, growth, and helping others. Making it to the starting line is always something worth celebrating. In the ABA world, it signifies a family's commitment to their child's journey -- the new schedules, hours, and practice. And, like with anything in life, consistency is key in ABA. A family must stick to their "training plan," the individualized program created by their clinical team to meet their child's needs. ABA therapy focuses on building skills to achieve larger goals and foster independence. However, our learners aren't running a sprint; it's similar to a marathon instead. The journey of progress is a long marathon composed of numerous smaller goals that lead to achieving the larger ones.
