Know your communication style Ever wondered why connecting with some people is easier than with others? Maybe you’ve noticed that you relate better to people who focus more on providing accurate and reliable details than people who just want you to “get to the point.” Or, maybe you’re more comfortable with people who take a steady, cautious approach, rather than risk-takers or adventurous types. Or, perhaps you relate best to people who are more self-controlled than outspoken. Knowing your communication style can help you better understand why you’re reacting in different situations, and help you more quickly and easily connect with people whose styles and preferences differ from yours. At the Confident Communicator, we use the DiSC model to help us understand the four communication styles. It looks like this.

Understanding Different Styles of Communication. Understanding the various communication styles can help you navigate different situations with ease. Here are some common communication styles: 1. Assertive Communication: This style involves expressing your thoughts and feelings clearly and respectfully, while also being open to the thoughts and feelings of others. It promotes honesty and transparency in interactions. 2. Passive Communication: People using this style tend to avoid conflict and prioritize the feelings of others over their own. They may have difficulty expressing their own needs and opinions. 3. Aggressive Communication: On the opposite end of the spectrum, aggressive communicators tend to be forceful and may disregard the feelings of others. This style can lead to conflicts and misunderstandings. 4. Passive-Aggressive Communication: This style combines elements of both passive and aggressive communication. People using this style may appear passive on the surface but express their true feelings through indirect means. By recognizing these different communication styles, we can adapt our approach to better connect with others. I was particularly excited about the communication style exercise at the conference. It prompted me to reflect on my own communication style and the potential barriers it might pose in interacting with others. As I explored the analytical, amiable, driver, and expressive communication styles, I realized the importance of understanding and adapting to different styles to enhance communication effectiveness. Discovering that my dominant communication style is expressive didn't come as a surprise, considering my natural inclination towards being a good communicator, enthusiastic, and imaginative. These qualities have always been integral to how I engage with others and approach various situations. However, it's also important for me to acknowledge the aspects of my communication style that may sometimes be perceived as talking too much or coming on too strong. When communicating with me, allowing ample time for discussion is key. I appreciate having the space to delve into topics thoroughly and explore different angles. If I happen to go off on a tangent, your patience is invaluable. I often find myself inspired by various ideas, and having the flexibility to explore them helps me think creatively. Additionally, relating the future impact or value of ideas resonates with me. I thrive on understanding the bigger picture and how our discussions contribute to broader goals or outcomes. Providing bulleted points is another effective way to communicate with me. It helps me stay organized and focused, ensuring that I can grasp key information quickly and effectively.
