🌟 A Shocking Reality Check on Obesity & Ozempic 🌍💊 Yesterday, we had an insightful lecture at Baptist Health South Florida as a part of Jose 'Pepe' Alvarez, MD annual lecture. Dr. Herbert Aronow's presentation on the current landscape of GLP-1 RAs was a true eye-opener. But what really stuck with me was the staggering price differences for Ozempic across the globe. I decided to do some digging into the data myself, and here's what I found: 📝 Countries with higher obesity rates seem to be paying a hefty premium for Ozempic. In the U.S., where obesity rates are the highest, we're shelling out a whopping $936 a month – almost 10x more than countries like the U.K. Why? It all boils down to supply and demand. Higher demand = higher prices. But there's hope on the horizon! The patent for Ozempic expires in 2031. However, until then, we could be stuck with these sky-high prices unless governments step in. The Future of GLP-1 Agonists 📈 The global market for these medications is expected to explode, reaching a staggering USD 133.35 billion by 2030! This means that addressing affordability and accessibility is more crucial than ever. At the 30th Congress of the International Society of Hypertension which took place over the past weekend in Cartagena, Colombia, we were thrilled that Professor Paul Whelton, Show Chwan Chair of Global Public Health at Tulane University, New Orleans, Louisiana, and President of the World Hypertension League, shared a #clinicalTrials overview of #GMRx2, George Medicines’ novel, low-dose, triple combination candidate for the treatment of #hypertension, including initiation of treatment.   Paul, who chaired our Phase III trial program’s steering committee, highlighted the positive results from our two pivotal trials which showed that the combination candidate significantly reduced #bloodPressure and improved control rates vs dual therapy or placebo, with good tolerability and no increase in adverse event withdrawals.   He also reviewed the positive results from the recently completed VERONICA trial in Nigeria, led by Dike Bevis Ojji from University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, Nigeria, published in JAMA, funded by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) of Australia and supported by The George Institute for Global Health – the first trial to evaluate a low-dose triple combination pill as initial or early therapy for hypertension in Africa.    This was a great opportunity to highlight the clinical and #GlobalHealth significance of these findings and the potential of this candidate to transform the management of hypertension. Recent publication of another two scientific papers, in collaboration with an international team of experts, on the topic of progression from prediabetes to diabetes in transfusion-dependent patients with thalassaemia.  Hopeful that we'll contribute to advancing knowledge in this crucial, albeit understudied, field in order to promote best clinical care of people with thalassaemia. #thalassemia #prediabetes #diabetes #transfusionmedicine

Rant about our “Health Care System” and “Diet Industry” – Last night I met with a 50-year-old woman struggling with weight for a decade. She's been on 11 medications in the past year for her “Broken Metabolism.” She lost her gallbladder due to Ozempic and now has stomach pains, possibly gastroparesis. She’s also on statins, blood pressure meds, and SLG2 agonists to lower blood sugars. She faces severe emotional distress; her doctors aren’t listening and just prescribe more meds. By the end, she was in tears. Our health care system and diet industry are broken. Health care is about treating symptoms with meds, leading to more side effects and drugs, benefiting doctors and pharma industries financially. The diet industry is equally disgusting. Promoting Semaglutide meds like Ozempic and other “gimmicky” weight loss drugs promises fast results but with insane side effects and the risk of Thyroid cancer. The outdated advice to “eat less and move more” harms people, and combined with these drugs, it’s no wonder people are breaking down emotionally and becoming metabolically dysfunctional. I know my system CAN and WILL help her, but she’s jaded by past experiences with doctors and health professionals. At the end of our meeting, she couldn’t even enroll, saying she “had to think about it,” which often means no. It’s disgusting our society has reached this point. Too many look for quick fixes, trying to shortcut their biology, paying with their health. There’s a class-action lawsuit against Novo Nordisk, makers of Ozempic, for making people sick. This is malpractice and medically negligent, deserving major repercussions, including jail time. I hope people seek the truth about losing weight and becoming healthy. It doesn’t take drugs, extreme dieting, or suffering. It’s as simple as regulating hormones with whole, unprocessed FOODS! Drug companies and doctors want you to believe otherwise, keeping you on meds for life, making you sicker while they get richer. Rant over! #health #weightloss #healthy #wellness

Health disparities significantly challenge access to effective diabetes treatments, including GLP-1 drugs, particularly in socially deprived areas. At Virta, we strive to improve treatment accessibility for disadvantaged populations by considering factors like rurality and the Area Deprivation Index (ADI). Our continuous efforts aim to enhance diabetes outcomes for all individuals, regardless of social status, by ensuring fair access not only to Virta's nutritional therapy but also to GLP-1 drugs for those needing them, including safe options for a GLP-1 off-ramp. This year at the American Diabetes Association (ADA) conference, we will present three abstracts highlighting our commitment to improving health outcomes in socially deprived areas. One of our abstracts was notably recognized as one of the “Health Disparities Committee’s Top 10 Recommended Abstracts,” underscoring the impact of our work.
