meriSTEM@NIE is excited to partner with The Head Foundation, Temasek Foundation, Caterpillar Foundation and Prestasi Junior Indonesia in the STEM teacher capacity building programme for 110 teachers in Riau Island and 50 teachers in Bogor, Indonesia. The teacher participants suggested interesting ideas for problem-centric integrated STEM lessons with "T" as the emphasis in the STEM curriculum to develop students' digital literacy. Many of these ideas are culturally relevant. Perhaps a fourth centricity of the S-T-E-M Quartet can be "Culture-Centric"! #TheHeadFoundation

Liberty in Learning: The Merdeka Belajar Initiative
The Merdeka Belajar Curriculum represents a significant advancement in the Indonesian education landscape, promising transformative changes in the manner in which we learn and teach. Adopting a project-based approach, this curriculum aims to provide teachers and students with greater freedom and flexibility in the learning process, while simultaneously enhancing the overall quality of education.
As we commemorate National Education Day on May 2, 2024, it is fitting to reflect on the transformative potential of initiatives such as the Merdeka Belajar Curriculum in shaping the future of education in Indonesia. This commemoration serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts to revolutionize our education system and provide every student with the opportunity to thrive.
One of the primary advantages of the Merdeka Belajar Curriculum is its emphasis on developing students' soft skills and character. The curriculum's focus on interactive learning through real-world projects equips students with the ability to be innovative and creative while simultaneously strengthening their moral values and ethical conduct essential for success.
However, like any innovation, this curriculum presents challenges. One such challenge is the need for thorough preparation, both in terms of infrastructure and teacher training for implementing the novel learning approach. Additionally, the active involvement of parents and other stakeholders is essential for the successful implementation of this curriculum.
Nonetheless, should this curriculum prove to be a success, its impact on the Indonesian education system will be profound. Students will be better prepared to meet future challenges, while teachers will have greater scope to adopt more creative and innovative teaching methods. Such a development will have a profound and positive influence on the education system, leading to significant improvements in the quality of teaching and learning, and contributing to the emergence of an advanced and competitive nation.
In conclusion, it can be argued that the Merdeka Belajar Curriculum represents not just an educational innovation, but also an important step towards liberating the education sector in the country. By providing individuals with the autonomy to learn and develop according to their potential, it is possible to create a more promising and enduring future for generations yet to come.

Today, I visited my friend who specializes in crafting items from clay. I was thrilled to try making a mask from clay in Bantul, a city renowned for its arts. One topic that consistently arises when we converse is the rising cost of college education.
Many young people struggle to secure employment due to the stringent requirements of companies or projects. Despite the valuable experience young people bring, education certificates remain a top priority here.
I hope the government does not view higher education as a secondary concern, as we, as young people, aspire to be part of the Gold Indonesia generation by 2045.
If we fail to establish and strengthen the system today, can we realistically achieve this goal in 2045? The future of our nation ultimately depends on the next generation of young people.

Yesterday, our friends at Native Discovery came to the SIS campus!
They gave us a series of wonderful workshops on identity and perception in the context of #OrangAsli (Indigenous Malaysians). I learned so much about Orang Asli community and culture and many of our students were introduced to the term for the first time.
As we navigate the path toward inclusive and holistic education, it's crucial to recognize and integrate the invaluable wisdom of Indigenous cultures into our school systems.
#Indigenousknowledge encompasses centuries of profound understanding, deeply rooted in the interconnectedness of nature, community, and spirituality. By introducing this knowledge into schools, we not only honor Indigenous traditions but also enrich the learning experience for all students. Here's why:
1️⃣ #CulturalDiversity: Incorporating Indigenous knowledge promotes cultural diversity and fosters respect for different perspectives. It encourages students to appreciate and celebrate the richness of human heritage.
2️⃣ Holistic Learning: Indigenous knowledge offers holistic insights into various subjects, including environmental science, #sustainable practices, and traditional medicine. By embracing this knowledge, we provide a more comprehensive education that resonates with learners on a deeper level.
3️⃣ #EnvironmentalStewardship: Indigenous cultures possess profound insights into sustainable living practices and environmental stewardship. By learning from these practices, students develop a deeper respect for the Earth and are empowered to become responsible custodians of the planet.
4️⃣ #SocialJustice and Reconciliation: Introducing Indigenous knowledge into schools is a crucial step toward reconciliation and healing. It acknowledges the historical injustices faced by Indigenous communities and helps bridge the gap between different cultural groups.
5️⃣ #EmpoweringIndigenousYouth: By validating Indigenous knowledge in education, we empower Indigenous youth to take pride in their heritage and contribute their unique perspectives to society. It promotes self-esteem, resilience, and a sense of belonging.
As educators, policymakers, and community members, it's our collective responsibility to ensure that Indigenous knowledge is not only respected but also integrated into the fabric of our educational institutions. Let's embrace diversity, foster understanding, and create a more inclusive future for generations to come.

Educational transformation in Mu Cang Chai, Vietnam
Results of a year of review
Nestled amidst Vietnamese rice terraces, Mu Cang Chai faced a barrier: no English teachers meant no English for its children. However, after a year-deployed project, iLINK, has sparked a remarkable transformation.
iLINK leverages technology, connecting master teachers online with 117 co-teachers in Mu Cang Chai, teaching 3,700 students across 117 classes. Digital lessons blend with co-teacher support, even if they don't know English.
Students' progress is astounding. After just one year, they recognize vocabulary, understand simple sentences, and speak with confidence. Games and activities fuel their love for learning. Many students even exceed expectations, showcasing remarkable skills.
Co-teachers have flourished too. Initially apprehensive, they've become tech-savvy, mastering platforms like Zoom and Megaschool. Older and H'Mong teachers, historically at a disadvantage, have shown significant improvement in tech use, exceeding 60% growth in competency.
iLINK's impact extends beyond classrooms. School boards and local educational leader see it as a game-changer, granting equal access to quality English regardless of condition of economies, geography and ethnic group. The project has activated and upgraded infrastructure condition by investing in new smart TVs and modern equipment, transforming classrooms into vibrant learning hubs.
Most importantly, the project promotes digital transformation. Hesitant co-teachers are now embracing online platforms, paving the way for a future where technology seamlessly enhances learning.
iLINK's inspiring story resonates throughout Vietnam. It shines as a beacon for regions struggling with educational disparities, demonstrating the power of collaboration, technology, and dedication to revolutionizing education for future generations.
