#InTheNews - Op-ed ✍️ "The vagaries of #climatechange have inevitably affected the #right to #health due to direct and indirect impacts of #airpollution, #risingtemperatures, #climatichazards, etc. No strata of #Indiansocieties are refrained from these persistent issues," writes Ms Harshita Kaur, Research Associate, TERI - The Energy and Resources Institute in her Financial Express (India) op-ed. 📰 Read here 👉 https://lnkd.in/gCkh_imw The violation of these rights can be sensed in the inability of #vulnerablecommunities to adapt to #climatechange or even cope at their own pace. The impacts on right to #equality are also evident with the varying geography of India and a range of #vulnerablepopulations. #ClimateAction #NDCs #SupremeCourt #HumanRights #LifestyleForEnvironment

Land-based climate action strategies targeting land-based carbon sinks have gained considerable attention across public and private sectors. For developing countries like India, upscaling land-based climate interventions must align with broader objectives like ensuring food security, improving land productivity and enhancing farmer livelihoods. To enable this just and equitable transition to low-carbon pathway, there is a need to analyse the risks and benefits for vulnerable communities. To address this, IORA in collaboration with TERI - The Energy and Resources Institute is conducting a study which aims to understand the current context of land-use and land-based climate policies within India, supported by development of GHG inventory of the country. The overarching objective was “to ensure a socially inclusive and equitable process is being followed when land-based climate actions are being implemented”. This involved an analysis of the socio-economic context, assessment of transition risks, and proposing solutions for reducing risks associated with land-based climate actions, supported by stakeholder consultations and research. Join us tomorrow at World Sustainable Development Summit (WSDS) as our senior manager Charu Tiwari along with Amlan Mishra (Research Associate, TERI) discuss on the key learnings from the work undertaken by both the teams on the scope of just transitions for land-based climate action in India”. Date: 8 February 2024 (Thursday) | Time: 02:00 PM – 03:30 PM (IST) Venue: Jacaranda II Hall, India Habitat Centre, New Delhi Watch us live - https://lnkd.in/gGFQhyVZ We look forward to engaging dialogues at #WSDS2024.

India faces a dual climate crisis with extreme heat waves and severe monsoon flooding. Despite achieving early climate targets, gaps in effective policy implementation remain. Critics argue that recent environmental regulations favor business interests over genuine climate action, risking greenwashing. India urgently needs robust climate laws to ensure true environmental progress and resilience. #ClimateCrisis #ClimateAction #Greenwashing #ExtremeWeather #SustainableDevelopment https://lnkd.in/ea2pf2d9

#India's climate action plans need to prioritize vulnerable communities. Current policies prioritize economic interests over environmental and social justice, risking further marginalization of the communities already affected by #ClimateChange like #Indigenous and coastal communities, farmers, etc. We need inclusive adaptation strategies, enhance afforestation with native species, and ensure community-led renewable energy to ensure that #Climate resilience benefits all.
