The G7’s support of a global #EnergyStorage goal, aiming for a six-fold storage capacity increase by 2030, marks an important step on the route to achieving the global #3xRenewables target. Julia Souder highlights that long duration energy storage (#LDES) is an essential component in the mix for a clean #EnergyTransition led by renewables. By storing excess electricity when demand is low and releasing it back into the grid as demand increases, LDES stabilises supply and demand imbalances and allows systems to be completely powered by renewables. 📈Wind and solar, backed by hydropower, drove EU renewable electricity generation to all-time high in 2023, finds Ember’s freshly released European Electricity Review. The review shows that the EU is breaking records in electricity generated from renewables, but the pace has to be accelerated. The Renewable Energy Statistics 2024 released by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) today shows that despite renewables becoming the fastest growing source of power, the world risks missing the tripling renewables target pledged at COP28. 🎯 To stay the course, the world will now have to grow renewables capacity at a minimum 16.4% rate annually through 2030. Hydropower provides the backbone to solar and wind - with the capacity to store the electricity when the wind doesn't blow and the sun doesn't shine. 🚀 Renewables are ROCKETING 🚀 Hydropower has been one of the oldest source of renewable energy, using natural flows of water to generate electricity, and hydroelectricity generation increased by 2% (up to 70TWh) in 2022, reaching 4 300 TWh (International Energy Agency (IEA), Renewables 2023). But have a look at the data from Ember and the Energy Institute - wind energy has been on a tear since 2000, and solar technology exploded since 2010.
