As mental health advocates, it is important to be aware of the rights and protections afforded to individuals who are inpatient at psychiatric hospitals in New York State. Patients deserve care that respects their dignity and personal integrity, while receiving treatment that is both respectful and effective. Here are some key rights for inpatients in New York State psychiatric centers: - Patients have the right to receive care tailored to their needs, ensuring respectful and effective treatment. - Patients have the right to be free from unnecessary restraint or seclusion. - Informed consent is essential for surgical procedures and other treatments. - Patients can choose to participate in or refuse research studies. - Patients should be involved in discharge planning, and their rights continue even after leaving the hospital. It's important to remember that if you believe your rights (or someone else’s) are being violated, help is available through the Mental Hygiene Legal Service, hospital Boards of Visitors, and the New York State Justice Center for the Protection of People with Special Needs. Let's continue advocating for mental health awareness and empowerment! 🌟

Congratulations to Dr. Kathleen McCoy, associate professor of community mental health nursing, and Dr. Kimberly Williams, professor of community mental health nursing, for recently publishing an article in the Archives of Psychiatric Nursing discussing an innovative model combining the spirit of motivational interviewing (MI) communication, and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) as a patient-centered care model to improve continuity of care while enabling patients to progress during therapy.
