No one in the swim school industry really talks about what to do, when a member of your team approaches you and says "I want to leave because ... "I WANT TO FOLLOW MY DREAMS" However I do something that some might find a bit strange 🤔 Starting from when a teacher first joins us: One of the earliest conversations I have with my team members is about what will happen if they tell me they want to leave or are planning to leave at some point, and I encourage this conversation throughout their time with us. It might seem a bit odd speaking to team members about leaving us. However this is part of my open door policy, it allows us to have an open and professional conversation. Which also aids in a better understanding of both our expectations and opportunities to provide support. And, I might just add, our turn over of teachers is very low, with many team mebers being with us for the full 5 years, almost 6 years we've been operational. So talking about leaving, seems to have the opposite effect 😅 Recently when Daisy (One of our head swim teachers) approached me and said "I'm leaving to pursue a career in Australia" it wasn't a shock. Because we had spoken about her 'exit strategy', hopes and dreams from day one. The expectations we're open and honest. As our head swim teacher, Daisy even helped us find a suitable replacement, being heavily involved in the recruitment process. We have exit strategy in franchising, so why don't we have them in swim teaching 🤷♀️ Your probably wondering what did I say to Daisy when she told me, she would be leaving? The truth... "I'm gutted your going, and I'm going to miss working with you but I support your decision and your dream. Don't be a stranger! Good luck in Australia.. p.s.
