#TBT 💫 FRIENDS IN TECH #5 💫 🎉 Last Thursday I was lucky to attend the fifth instalment of Friends in Tech, with over 50 people gathering at the Wolf & I in Windsor, Melbourne. This was the third time this event was held in Melbourne, and it just gets better every time. It was great to see so many people that I haven't seen in a while (John Mullins 👀🤗 ). However, this is more than just an industry/networking event post....its an appreciation post and a special shoutout to Aaron Luxmoore - our super connector, whose incredible ability to bring people together has been the driving force behind the success of these events. Aaron's vision of creating a space where industry professionals can genuinely connect without the typical networking event constraints has truly come to life and continues to grow. 🚫 There no presentations, no panels or speakers, no agenda or sponsorships. 🤩 The entire concept of FIT, championed by Aaron, is to create a relaxed environment where people in similar roles and working with similar clients can simply 'hang out.' It's a space to share challenges and stories openly, without any filters, and to connect without the pressure of selling or pitching. Who might not feel as welcome at your #Conference welcoming #Event? I remain (surprised, befuddled, disappointed, dismayed, et al) that so many large conferences have a mass reception or social event as their first informal gathering.   Those events are great for people who naturally thrive in that environment or for attendees who can reconnect with others they already know.   But they can offer a chilly shoulder to many others. It can be off-putting to walk into a space filled with people and only see strangers.   Better perhaps to start with smaller events targeted for like-minded attendees (regions, functional positions, types of organizations, disciplines, career stages, shared interests) or to incorporate opportunities for those connections in any mass gathering. Either would help individuals build a critical social mass with which to share the conference experience as it unfolds.   Aiming first for lower-case communities may be a faster route to achieving #Community capital overall.

The beauty of building a business slowly and steadily? It allows me to listen to our founding members, shape the community, and test things along the way. As a solo business owner, my business needs to fit my life, but I'm always open to adjustments to support my members. Sometimes, even small changes make a big difference—like adding name badges at our in-person events or a little more structure to our in-person coworking events… Thanks to the invaluable input from our members, I recently revamped our coworking events to tap into the collaborative nature and expertise of our community. 🪸 Now each month we focus on a specific theme or topic - ranging from mini-masterminds, content creating sessions, to goal setting, and even member-led sessions. I can’t wait to dive into these new and improved sessions next month. Do you ask for feedback and make changes when needed?
