Embracing Growth, Teamwork, and New Challenges
As I reflect on my time here at Contract Resources, I’m amazed at how much I’ve learned and how far I’ve come. Still within my first year as a Graduate Chemical Engineer stationed here at Ampol Lytton Refinery, I’ve gained invaluable experience in planning work methodologies, developing SWMS, and conducting step 7 conversations before executing chemical cleaning jobs. One of my most significant milestones was having a small part to play in contributing to T&I 2024, where I led a group of fitters and technicians during night shifts, overseeing the chemical cleaning of various vessels.
It’s funny how life brings certain experiences full circle. My time in the Singapore Army as a section IC really helped me step up, especially when working with seasoned professionals—many with more years of experience under their belt than I have! As the turnaround wound down, I transitioned back into the Industrial Services crew. The Industrial Services Supervisors and Leading Hands gave me opportunity to join them and assist in the industrial services work, which opened my eyes to fitting work, HPW blasting, and vacuum operations. Witnessing high-risk operations like bundle pulling firsthand was an eye-opener—I saw how much expertise and teamwork goes into making these complex processes run smoothly.
What’s been just as rewarding is seeing how every workgroup within Contract Resources comes together to get the job done. From scaffolding erection for insulation removal to mechanical maintenance and recommissioning, it’s a true team effort. And while my role is as a chemical engineer, I’ve learned not to limit myself—I’ve gained experience in areas I never imagined, which could prove invaluable down the line.
Beyond the technical side, I’ve really bonded with my team. The friendships I’ve built here remind me of the camaraderie I had back in the Army. One example? We decided on a whim to throw a barbecue—everyone chipped in $10 for ingredients, and we spent the day laughing, chatting, and just enjoying each other’s company. It’s moments like these that remind me that while work is important, the relationships we build along the way are what truly matter.
Work hard, play hard—that’s the balance I’m grateful to have found here at Contract Resources.
