Another Pathfinder Career Narratives blogpost from the archives! 📚📓 Pathfinder Career Narratives 2 was written by Emily McNaughton, PhD, Senior Medical Science Liason at Biogen. These blogs are written by doctorate holders who have moved from their research subject area in universities into the many fulfilling career pathways for researchers. Dr McNaughton wrote for us about her career between academia and the pharmaceutical industry. Emily has a PhD in immunology from the University of Bristol and worked for a period as a Project Manager at Imperial College London. This one is particularly helpful for demonstrating that there is no binary between academia and other sectors. "Overall, my thoughts on my PhD experience are that it was essential to get me where I am today. The qualification is necessary in every job description for an MSL position. The ability to problem solve, network, and learn quickly all came from skills I learned from my time in academia. The skills within academia are incredibly transferable; you just need to leverage them by matching them to buzzwords on any job description you see to let any prospective employer know that you are the candidate they’ve been looking for." https://lnkd.in/ejSAARdh #academia #universities #careers #researchers

Editorial article: Highly consolidated QC materials support EFLM Green Lab Initiative Due to the initiative of the European Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (EFLM), the issue of sustainability has become a key focus in clinical laboratories. A recent study from Ramón y Cajal University Hospital in Madrid, Spain, has shown that using a highly consolidated QC material can have a significant positive impact on lab efficiency and sustainability – without compromising analytical performance. #clinicalqc #clinicallaboratory #medicallaboratory #sustainability #greenlabs #greenlab LGC Clinical Diagnostics https://lnkd.in/ejjP3JWN

💡 Are you a Pharmacovigilance professional? Do you conduct Medical Literature Monitoring? Check out some interesting findings from research conducted by our CEO on the topic of the role of Medical Literature in Signal Detection. 🔍 Key Insights from My Research 1/ The Impact of Medical Literature: Medical literature is a relevant source of data for signal detection. Literature reports represent about 33% of all reports which led to SmPC update. In this aspect, the greatest impact comes from reports published in journals indexed in medical databases. 2/ Correlations Uncovered: Our study found correlations between the number of SADR and SAEs and the journal Impact Factor, as well as a correlation between the number of SAEs and indexing in MEDLINE and/or Embase databases. 3/ Manual vs. Database Review: The effectiveness of identifying literature reports is higher through manual, full-text journal reviews than through searches in scientific databases. 4/ Challenges in Accessibility: In Polish medical journals, about 40% of literature reports are published only in Polish, limiting their availability in medical databases. 5/ Risks in Literature Review: There is a risk of missing up to 30% of reports presented in conference proceedings or journal supplements and 30% of reports due to improper drug indexing or flawed search strategies. 6/ Selectivity in Journals: In one of our studies, 48% of information was identified in only 10 out of 84 medical journals, highlighting the importance of selecting the right journals to achieve the appropriate effectiveness of the local literature search for Pharmacovigilance purposes. Please check the recommended solution for this matter by Polish Society of Pharmacovigilance (Polskie Towarzystwo Bezpiecznej Farmakoterapii, PTBFarm) here: https://lnkd.in/d_bf-Az5 7/ Literature monitoring should encompass the use of medical databases and local journals. Both methods have their advantages and limitations, but neither should be used as standalone solution. 🚀 These findings highlight the dynamic nature of Pharmacovigilance and the ongoing need to adapt and refine MLM search approaches. What is your experience on this matter? 💡If you're interested in learning how to efficiently perform a medical literature search, make sure to explore the courses provided by AIDIFY -> join.aidify.eu
🎓 I'm delighted to share that I've reached a significant milestone in my professional career. In Dec 2023 I've earned my Ph.D. in Medical Sciences and Health Sciences, culminating in my thesis: "The Role of Medical Literature in Signal Detection". This milestone marks over four years of dedication and overcoming challenges. 🙏 This achievement is the result of the significant support and guidance from many, who have been my mentors along the way. A special shoutout to my supervisor, Prof. Adam Przybylkowski, Maciej Szewczyk, Agata Maciejczyk, Katarzyna Łozak – your constant encouragement was the foundation of my success. 🔍 Key findings from my research: 1/ The Impact of Medical Literature: Medical literature is a relevant source of data for signal detection.
