There are a number of reasons an executive leader may choose to hire an executive coach. Leadership can be lonely. When one is at the apex, there are certain challenges or conversations which he/she cannot have with their peers or teams. When this situation arises, who can these leaders turn to? I’ve supported 30+ managers and senior leaders over the past 5 years. Here’s 5 non-negotiables for leadership development success: 1. Clearly defined program goals 2. Alignment to business strategy 3. Executive buy-in & program sponsorship 4. Quantifiable metrics to measure success 5. Skill gaps analysis to benchmark your current state Why? 1. Without clearly defined program goals, it’s difficult to understand the outcomes they can expect post-training and how it will benefit them. 2. If there’s no alignment with business strategy, then the skills may not be relevant or applicable to their role. 3. When executives don’t buy-in and walk the talk, then no one buys-in. 4. Not having quantifiable metrics means there’s no way to know if they’re improving. 5. If we don’t start with a skills gap analysis, it’s hard for them to understand their strengths and weaknesses and what areas they should focus on for ongoing development.
