UC Learning Lab inspires College of Medicine to SIT | University of Cincinnati Although the efficacy of the SIT approach for healthcare innovation has been written up in journal articles and demonstrated through dozens of new devices and drugs on the market, every so often a new generation needs to experience a “proof of concept”. We are grateful that University of Cincinnati’s Leaning Lab has been Systematic Inventive Thinking’s sandbox for such activities for many years. Just last weekend, another group of faculty members and students got together to “test drive” SIT to ideate new solutions around the Pulse Ox device in hospitals. While a short ideation session will never be enough to create an innovation that can be driven to implementation, it is a great format for demonstrating that the approach really does push people to ideate within the Sweet Spot – ideas that are disruptive enough to be truly exciting, while also being down-to-earth so that their feasibility is high. Virtu-WIL, a program funded by the Canadian government, was designed to develop, test, and offer virtual simulations to foster post-secondary healthcare education in Canada. 📝 According to the study published in 2024, most students found the virtual simulations engaging and helpful in learning and preparing for clinical practice. Back on the hunt with our next Spring Summit on 3/12! Youth Medical Mentorship is partnering with Hillcrest Healthcare System , Tulsa Tech , and Tulsa Public Schools to empower over 200 students to what a career looks like in medicine in their own home towns! Amazing leaders in our community including Carolina Morris , Jamaal Dyer , Krystal Hutchinson, M.Ed. , and Kathy Dodd, Ph.D. have taken care of everything to the last detail to where students can come in with an interest and leave with inspiration, mentors, a plan, and a glimpse of what is possible for them! The hardest part is identifying students who would not get this opportunity any where else as there are so many factors that align with socioeconomics for families today attaining high demand and high earning STEM jobs tomorrow. If we only helped those who already have the resources, we would isolate all the mentors to students who may already have the resilience to go the distance. Think about the first person that comes to your mind as a future provider, then go further and consider two more. We need to increase the talent pool for care-takers, and it will take us providing the exception for student success. We can do such much more with a community rallying around the cause to help us get in front of students! The Call to Action: TALK TO STUDENTS- ask them what they are interested in, ask why, inquire what they think their own limitations are, what classes do they take, what classes do their friends take, do the classes they take today shape the career they’re capable of tomorrow. Most importantly, is this something they would be interested in or have ever done before? If any of these answers lead you to think that YMM can help, let’s get to work for our youth and get them plugged in to opportunities that can change decisions and trajectories. Lets get them to this Summit and beyond!

In our most recent ▶️ webinar for health science educators, Jeff Hartz, Center Director for East Indiana Area Health Education Center, shared valuable insights on leveraging Virtual Patient Simulations to enrich after-school programs. When asked about the benefits of incorporating Body Interact into this programs, Hartz emphasized how it offers early exposure to simulation as a clinical learning modality.
