This year has brought tremendous changes for me, both personally and professionally. In June, we relocated across the country to Lincoln, Nebraska, to be closer to family. During that time, I ruptured my ACL, underwent surgery, and fulfilled a long-awaited dream by purchasing our first home together. Amidst all this, a unique opportunity came my way—to leave my fully remote role as an onboarding engineer, working with the best boss I've ever had, and accept a position at a local tech company as a system engineer. This new role is hybrid, meaning I’m required to go onsite when needed. It was one of the toughest professional decisions I've ever made. But given the timing of my surgery and the potential for growth, I couldn’t pass it up. Some might think it's crazy to leave a fully remote job with such a great boss for a hybrid role in Lincoln, but it turned out to be the best decision I could have made. While remote work may be a dream for many (and I still love working from home when I can), I’ve learned so much from being able to work hands-on with the equipment and witness issues firsthand. This experience has propelled my knowledge in ways I couldn’t have imagined. Having face-to-face discussions with other engineers and DevOps teams has been invaluable. The company I work for also genuinely cares about its employees and continually shows that in meaningful ways. For anyone starting out in tech, my advice would be to find a role where you can physically interact with the devices—pull cables, trace connections, install APs, and design networks with your clients' goals in mind. The satisfaction of seeing the results of your work firsthand is unmatched, and you’ll gain far more knowledge than if you only ever sit behind a screen clicking buttons. #tech #itcareer #techcareer

I remember in my early career, having a conversation with my father. (Frazier Evans) I wanted to remote work sooooo bad. And I remember him telling me at the time that I needed to earn that right. Of course, like anyone who's a young adult, I did not take that well. Over 10 years later, I can see and understand the necessity of the advice he gave me. It benefits anyone in this career to be on site first. You learn how the hardware works, you are forced into situations that develop your ability to interact with executives and customers. How to present yourself and many, many other soft skills that get developed. Soft skills only learned through experience. Hard skills only learned through experience. - there was a brownout in our area and I was responsible for a server closet at a business I was working at. I was the system admin. We had multiple UPS's and I made the decision to shut everything off after 15 minutes of power being out. Well the power came back on 5 minutes later. it took longer to bring everything back online, than it would have been to just wait. The UPS's had another hour of juice left. Something only learned through hands on experience. So to those getting into the career, there is a lot to be learned. Some of it's going to be business processes that is only learned while listening to other people in the office over. Other items will be learned that are important to your career many years later. #sysadmin #growth
