A useful update to the changing VAT landscape for independent schools and the parents of children who attend.
Following speculation around when the new Government’s proposal would come into force, it has now been confirmed that 20% VAT will apply to independent school fees from 1 January 2025. While this update now provides clarity, it is a much earlier commencement date than was previously envisaged, meaning there’s not a lot of time for both parents and schools to plan for its introduction. Announcing our next CIOT / Institute For Fiscal Studies Online Debate: Should VAT be charged on private school fees? The Labour Party intends to remove the exemption from VAT for independent school fees if it wins the general election. It would also end business rates relief for independent schools. In this debate we will explore how private education should be taxed in principle and practice. What are the principled arguments for and against taxing private education? How would a change in tax treatment affect pupils, parents, schools, government revenue and social mobility? In practice, how would VAT and business rates be applied to independent schools and what difficulties might arise? These are some of the questions our expert panel will consider in this topical debate. Panel: Stuart Adam - Senior Research Economist at the Institute for Fiscal Studies Sam Freedman - Senior Fellow at the Institute for Government and Senior Adviser to Ark Schools Julie Robinson - Chief Executive of the Independent Schools Council Kerry Sykes - Director of Big for Tax and Technical Adviser to the Charity Tax Group Charlotte Barbour (Chair) - Deputy President of the Chartered Institute of Taxation If you are interested in joining us for this debate, please register at: https://lnkd.in/ecU74c7F Audience members will have an opportunity to put questions to the panel using Slido. 📢 Important Update on VAT and Private School Fees in the UK From 29 July 2024, VAT has been officially introduced on private school fees in the UK. This change marks a significant shift in the funding landscape for private education. Additionally, an anti-forestalling measure has been implemented. This means that any fees related to terms commencing on or after 1 January 2025 will now be subject to VAT from today. It's essential for parents, schools, and stakeholders in the education sector to be aware of these changes and to plan accordingly. For further insights and implications of this update, feel free to reach out or share your thoughts below. #VAT #PrivateEducation #UKEducation #PolicyUpdate

💥 Big Back to School announcement this morning as one-word Ofsted judgments are scrapped. We hope the move will give all those working in schools more confidence to lead, teach and support, and give young people a well-rounded education that better prepares them for life and work 💥 🗝️ Key to this will come in the design of the Report Card - not just replicating the existing Ofsted judgment categories, but clearly separating out elements like how schools prepare young people for their next steps (academic or vocational) There is a pressing need for clarity about when and how this will come into play for FE colleges. We are just wrapping up a research project exploring how FE colleges experience the inspections process, find out more, here 🖱️ https://lnkd.in/eVv7E_nM

Using the ISEE and SSAT admissions exams as an opportunity to unlock student magic in Miami, London, NYC, Europe, and around the world. Now Available: Watermelon Math: Surprisingly Sweet Test Prep study cards. 🍉
How comfortable are you in the "I Don't Know Zone?" Even as adults this can be tricky! When students are going into an exam thinking they are supposed to know everything, it can be quite jarring to encounter unfamiliar material. An important part of test prep is building a student's comfort in the "I Don't Know Zone." I'm currently conducting ISEE Readiness Assessments, and I'm looking for indicators of future success, as well as the number of questions a student is getting right and wrong. If you know a student who will be taking the ISEE this fall, and that student has taken a diagnostic yet, now is the time! ☀️ #ISEEtestprep #ISEEreadiness #testprep #privateschooladmissions
