Machu Picchu: The Inca Trail is undoubtedly Peru's most popular trekking route. Recommended for the physical fit only, it runs for more than 40km and reaches 4,200 m.a.s.l. at its highest point, the Warmiwañuska or Dead Woman's Pass. The stone-paved trail, discovered in 1960 and part of the more than 23,000 km of roads built by the Incas across South America, crosses a remarkable range of natural landscapes and eco systems, from thick tropical jungle to the bear, unwelcoming rocks of the Andean mountains. All in all it's probably the most beautiful walk in South America. The Trail takes three to four days of tough hiking, and can be commenced at Chillca (Kilometre 76 of the Cusco-Machu Picchu railway) or, most frequently, at Qorihuayrachina, Kilometre 88 of the railway. The first day is relatively easy, and includes along the route the Inca ruins of Cusichaca, Q'ente, Pulpituyoc, and Llaqtapata, a site used for crop production remained well preserved. The second day is the hardest of all, mainly because the ascent becomes increasingly steep.

A nice article here from CNN highlighting some of the best long-distance hiking trails in Europe. The growth in slow tourism as the article alludes to is indeed a reaction to the ironically highly pressurised and environmentally damaging means of getting to where you need via air travel. Surely everyone can recount a holiday where the stress of getting to your destination required a holiday in itself to recuperate from the journey. The beauty of long and not so long distance hikes is once the rhythm of your day is established you are as far away as possible from the relentless pace of everyday life. A number of our destinations are mentioned here such as the South West Coast Path in the King Charles III England Coast Path, the Camino Frances and the Rota Vicentina or Fishermen’s Trail in Portugal. We are delighted to be offering the Fishermen's Trail as a new destination this year as it is our first tour in Portugal. Forbes website when writing of the hike described "beautiful beaches at the end of the world". This is especially so as you gaze on the Atlantic facing cliffs stretching as far as you can see. CNN says the hike "offers a wild and memorable alternative" to the better known trails in Europe. This crisp winter air is full of it." — John Burroughs =================================== (n the province of Malaga in the region of Andalusia in southern Spain) “Sierra de las Nieves,” which literally translates as “Snowy Mountain Range,” is found in the province of Malaga in the region of Andalusia in southern Spain. It’s not somewhere you would normally associate with snow but during the winter months the park is covered in snow -- and a great place for a family day trip.) + This mountain range is a National Park that has been designated a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO (and a European Destination of Excellence.} Although this region is generally quite mild all year round, from December to March there can be a lot of rain which (when cold enough) can mean snow at the highest points. +There are many hiking routes here for all levels. A medium level route is l Cortijo Huarte, found just above the recreational area of Los Sauces, near Yunquera. If you leave your car in Los Sauces you can take the 17km (~11 mi.) trek through the Spanish fir grove at Cubero. Further along you will find the ascent to the Puerto del Hornillo where you’ll see caves full of floating ice where the water has frozen. + From Madrid, you can take a trip to the mountains to see snow in the beautiful town of Rascafría (shown here) 1200 meters up in the mountains. If you want to stay the night, you can stop in Rascafría itself (or for a day trip you can travel from Madrid by bus.) + There is plenty to do here, whether you just want to play in the snow or go skiiing, sledding, snowboarding or snow-shoeing.If you want to go for a snowy trek, when you arrive in Rascafría head for the trail which is well signposted and by Las Presillas car park. + Rascafría has been described as looking like a Swiss village with it’s pretty village, bridges, sawmills, and of course snow! The most outstanding feature is said to be the Monastery of El Paular, which was founded in the 14th century and is situated two kilometres from the town. + Located in the middle of the stunning mountains of the Sierra de Guadarrama, the ski resorts in Rascafría offer fun and relaxation for all winter lovers.
