How Automatic transmission works: *Step 1:* The torque converter connects and disconnects the engine from the transmission, allowing the engine to continue running while the transmission shifts gears. *Step 2:* The planetary gear sets provides different gear ratios. It's made up of gears that rotate at different speeds. *Step 3:* Clutches and bands engage and disengage to select the appropriate gear ratio. The clutches and bands work together to connect and disconnect the gears. *Step 4:* The valve body controls the flow of fluid to engage and disengage the clutches and bands. It's like a hydraulic system that helps shift gears smoothly. *Step 5:* The transmission control module (TCM) controls the valve body and ensures smooth gear shifts. It's like the brain of the transmission, making sure everything works together seamlessly. *How it all works together:* 1. The engine produces torque, which is transferred to the torque converter. 2. The torque converter connects and disconnects the engine from the transmission. 3. The planetary gearset provides different gear ratios. 4. The clutches and bands engage and disengage to select the appropriate gear ratio. 5. The valve body controls the flow of fluid to engage and disengage the clutches and bands. 6. The TCM controls the valve body and ensures smooth gear shifts.
