Authored and produced by #youth, and launched at the UNECE Resource Management Week 2024, the guidebook serves as a crucial tool to aid policymakers, industry leaders, researchers, and civil society to navigate the complex landscape of mineral resources crucial for the global shift toward #renewableenergy technologies. "As we accelerate towards a low-carbon future, the responsible extraction and management of critical minerals become paramount," noted Bianca Derya Neumann, Chair of Chair of the Resource Management Young Member Group of the UNECE Expert Group on Resource Management. 📣 Partnership on sustainable critical and strategic minerals Yesterday, the #EU and #Australia signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for a bilateral partnership to cooperate on #sustainable critical and strategic minerals. This MoU on critical and strategic minerals between the European Union and Australia present exciting opportunities for the Northern Territory. This agreement could pave the way for a world-leading mining industry in this region. As this MoU is part of the EU mission to become climate-neutral by 2050, the question is: what would be needed to also encourage such a sustainable transformation in the regions that are delivering these critical materials. Given past experiences, it is obvious that the mining industry is confronted with the innovation challenge to find others ways to produce with respect for nature and local communities. From a science perspective, the innovation/transformation challenge would be, amongst others: ·      What is the role of nature based solutions to support such systems transformation in the mining sector?   ·      How should government, science, private sector and the local community collaborate to ensure such a just transition? Australia is helping lead the way in carbon mineralization – by identifying where and how best it can be done. According to Australia’s Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), Australia is co-leading the Enhanced Mineralization track for Carbon Dioxide Removal under Mission Innovation's global initiative Carbon Dioxide Removal Mission. "The first milestone in our three-year work plan includes producing a publicly available resource map," says Renee Birchall, CSIRO Lead for MI-CDR Engagement. "This global map will help identify potential feedstocks for mineral carbonation technologies. CSIRO is responsible for the Australian part." Arca believes that Australia has a multi-billion dollar opportunity in carbon dioxide removal. Our pilot in Western Australia is already seeing results.
