On 17 May 2024 we will be celebrating the FloWave Ocean Energy Research Facility's tenth birthday, with a an afternoon seminar followed by a demonstration and reception at the FloWave facility. This marks the point in 2014 when the facility moved from commissioning to commerical testing. Since then, FloWave has been at the forefront of ocean energy research, from the fundamental principles of fluid dynamics to the intricate pre-deployment assessments of wave and tidal energy devices. To comemmerate this, a seminar session will be held in the Nucleus building on the Kings Buildings campus, with speakers from academia and industry followed by a reception at FloWave. This will reflect on groundbreaking research impact in the first circular combined wave and current facility in the world, and offer insights into the future of the marine energy sector. The seminars will feature a diverse lineup of speakers including leading academics, pioneering technology developers, researchers, and the students who are the future of ocean energy. Each will share insights into their work, highlighting how FloWave's unique capabilities have been instrumental in their discoveries. Following this there is an opportunity to join the team for a demonstration and reception at the FloWave facility. Spaces are limited, so please use the EventBrite link below to secure your space at what should be an very interesting, and accessible, insight into a diverse body of work, and a chance to look at what the next ten years may hold. #OceanEnergy #WaveEnergy #TidalEnergy #FloatingOffshoreWind #TankTesting #Research

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) has been selected as one of 16 teams to research the enhanced production of geologic hydrogen by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) program, a $1.6 million federal funding effort to evaluate ways to stimulate hydrogen production from geologic resources. The project, led by Texas Tech University with partners from NREL, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Rio Tinto, and Lavoisier H2 Geoconsult, aims to stimulate hydrogen production from iron-rich mafic and ultramafic rocks through chemical, mechanical, and biological processes. While geological hydrogen is currently poorly understood, it has the potential to be a crucial energy resource that relies on certain types of rocks and subsurface environments that produce natural hydrogen. Clean hydrogen, including naturally occurring subsurface hydrogen, can reduce harmful emissions from energy-intensive sectors, such as chemical and industrial processes and heavy-duty transportation. NREL, led by Akindipe, will support the new project by implementing a microcosm experiment to characterize the rock, water, and hydrogen systems. NREL researchers Katherine Chou and Jianping Yu will find ways to inhibit the microbial uptake of the produced hydrogen and monitor the role of biocatalysts to help increase the rate of hydrogen production. Moreover, NREL's team will assist in developing tech-to-market efforts once the geologic hydrogen system is established as viable. OnLocation’s parent company, KeyLogic, is providing R&D support to DOE’s decarbonization efforts through its role as the prime support contractor for the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL). KeyLogic’s efforts include work in traditional decarbonization areas, such as transportation of CO2 for enhanced oil recovery, simulation of geologic sequestration reservoirs, and management of seismic events associated with CO2 storage. In addition, KeyLogic is supporting NETL on cutting edge research, such as development of supercritical CO2 power plants, Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS), and direct capture of CO2 from the atmosphere. An important area of research is implementing carbon capture in the industrial sector, especially for industries where electrification is difficult or expensive. KeyLogic is also working on “decarbonization-adjacent” research, such as the extraction of critical minerals from coal waste.
