FINAL YEAR PROJECT ENTIRE DOCUMENT (2 of 3 publications) As I mentioned, while organizing files I found my final year project, which is about the car that appears in the video of my previous post. It’s a very visual project that I encourage you to take a look at, especially as I believe it could be helpful for engineering students who want to see an example of a project that straddles both technical and artistic aspects. As I told you earlier, it is the result of two years of hard work along with my friend Jesús Ángel Pérez. Many sleepless nights, much effort, and a lot of learning along the way. But for me, the most important thing is that it was the design of a 100% electric car and a very visionary concept. We're talking about 2008, there were still no electric cars available on the market, and the trend for SUVs (in my opinion counterproductive) hadn't yet taken off. We created a small car, designed for the city and everyday use, which was relatively economical and, above all, fun to drive while being safe.The steering system is inspired by the Piaggio MP3 scooter, so the car leans like a motorcycle in curves, using its centrifugal force to its advantage even in bankless curves. It could also turn conventionally for parking. I am very proud of it, I learned a lot, and I regret not using it to break into the automotive industry, but I can't complain about where I've ended up. Again, advice for students and people afraid of not being good enough: if you don't try, you'll never know. Monday Morning Motivation: This is us—Fabian Breës and myself—nine years ago. Fresh out of Industrial Design school, no real automotive design experience, and just one year into running our own design studio above a kebab shop. Back then, Elon Musk was still considered a cool dude, and we were driven to design cool things and make a name for ourselves. This was our submission for the Michelin Design Challenge 2016: "Design For The Win"—reimagining the iconic Le Mans race in 2030. Looking back, it’s humbling to see how far we’ve come. What took us months in SolidWorks (far from ideal for these automotive surfaces) would now take just weeks, thanks to advancements in our process, tools, and experience. Ultimately, we didn't win the contest, but we did go on to design some pretty cool things. Never stop believing, never stop working, never stop building yourself. You got this. Unveiling the "Serpente - Veleno": A Journey in Automotive Design I'm thrilled to share a sneak peek of my latest project, the "Serpente - Veleno". Designing this car from scratch using Rhino has been an incredible learning experience. From the sleek aerodynamics to the meticulously crafted frame, every detail has been carefully thought out. Key Aspects of the Design Process: - NURBS Modeling: Leveraging Rhino's NURBS tools to create smooth, flowing curves and intricate details. - Boolean Operations: Combining, subtracting, and intersecting parts to define complex shapes. - Surface and Solid Modeling: Ensuring the car's aesthetic appeal and structural integrity. Learning and Creativity: - Designing from Scratch: Pushing my imagination to its limits and understanding every element of the car. - Problem-Solving: Overcoming challenges like fitting the engine into the frame and ensuring ergonomic seat design. - Iteration and Refinement: Continuously improving the design through modeling, testing, and refining. The Supercar Project Part #7 (The End..ish) It's been a while since posting the last update for this project. This is because I have reached an 'end' point and I am currently in the early stages of a NURBS project. I use 'end' because whilst the main design has been modelled, I am still not quite satisfied with the surfacing and overall finish - but are we ever? Just like any design project, there never really is an end or final model because we simply cant stop searching for improvements. So here it is, the 'final' model of the SubDivision Supercar project, as initially sketched by Saurabh S. and developed and modelled by myself under his mentorship. It has come a long way from the initial sketches. When solving surfaces I ended up developing and redesigning some elements of the vehicle, particularly the rear end. This significantly extended the project time as I then had to sketch, model, resketch etc. to come to a solved surface - this in turn led to surrounding areas also needing further development to regain cohesion. Although I am pleased with the outcome of the design, upon reflection I've learnt that as a modeller the main task is to deliver quality surfaces that translates a 2D sketch into a 3D form. Development to resolve surfaces is required but straying too far from the initial sketch can lead to a compounding of redesigning, which is time consuming. A balance is key. Going forward I will aim to model the sketch more closely and solve for surfaces that align with the design direction. This, along with communicating effectively with the designer at regular intervals, will speed up project timelines and deliver accurate results. Now having a complete project under my belt I can say that I am capable of modelling a design from sketch to 3D using SubDivision in Autodesk Alias. The next step will be rendering in UE5 to close off this project.
