The University of Notre Dame -- home of the Fighting Irish, also home of a binge-drinking campus culture like nowhere else, a culture which celebrates the Sunday-Wednesday grind just as much as the Thursday-Saturday bender. So, what do we do about it? In my new column, I discuss the importance of fostering an intentional, healthy relationship with drinking (or not drinking). Check it out here: https://lnkd.in/daNpz-_7

It’s an exciting time to be leading the Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV) on the transformative journey ahead as we work to realise the aspirations outlined in our new Strategic Plan. Our vision is to be a nation leading organisation for the Victorian local government sector in strategic foresight, policy and research, leadership and governance, service design and advocacy impact. Our purpose is to enable action that supports Victorian councils to create cities and regions, towns and communities that are thriving, inclusive and resilient. The MAV has positioned itself at the forefront to lead the local government sector, embracing the leadership challenge presented by unprecedented technological, economic, environmental, and social changes. Our commitment is unwavering as we strategically lead and strengthen councils, serving as the authoritative voice for the Victorian local government Sector. Our team will seek and embrace opportunities for growth aligned to the perspectives of our stakeholders and ensure that our strategic direction is not only visionary but also deeply rooted in the needs and aspirations of those we serve. The heart of our strength lies in the knowledge and expertise of councils in every region of Victoria. Together, we will build resilience, address climate change, and create a future where all our communities thrive. I look forward to the shared achievements and successes that await us. We know Victorian councils play a vital role in shaping and strengthening local communities. To help them keep doing just that, they need a strong body to provide leadership, advocacy and support. In other words, they need a strong MAV. Our roadmap for delivering that support over the next four years is set out in our new strategic plan. Titled ‘Shaping our Future’, it highlights how we will help local councils innovate, adapt, and thrive as we work to build a more resilient and sustainable Victoria. The MAV Strategic Plan 2024-2027 is available to read in full here: https://lnkd.in/gNrT5sB2 We’ll also be diving into the plan in more detail over the coming days on social media – watch this space for exciting insights.

Distinguished Professor of Economics @UNC-FSU | Research Associate, Cook Center @ Duke | Health | Labor & Immigration Economics
I have a professional update to celebrate (and others to come!). I have been selected the 2024 Educator of the Year by the Minnesota State Board of Trustees. This is the highest honor award for excellence in teaching in the entire Minnesota State system. Only 4 are selected out of dozens of applications. I am grateful to have several mentors and inspiring students in my professional journey who motivated me to pursue better and more innovative ways to delivery my teaching and to connect students to more relatable experiences and real world examples with maintaining high academic rigor. Some of my innovations include mixing a traditional course on Labor Economics with a study abroad component, jigsaw activities to discussed peer-reviewed articles, simulations of immigration process experiences, Pre and Post Debates, self introductions in online courses with sharing gratitude and savoring experiences, and incorporating students to real data to analyze local issues. Further, my activities also include direct discussions on equity, disparities, implicit bias, and examples that demystify the economics profession. #IlookLikeAnEconomist
Four SCSU employees were recently honored in the annual Minnesota State Board of Trustees Awards for Excellence. 👍 It's good. "No one understands the challenges and opportunities facing Victoria in the 21st century better than local councils. From rapidly evolving technology to social changes, shifting economies to environmental pressures, our local communities - and the governments that represent them - are at the forefront of multiple transformations happening simultaneously." The Municipal Association of Victoria - helmed by the indomitable Kelly Grigsby - has released it's 2024-2027 Strategic Plan. It's bold and ambitious and reflects the important role the local government sector must play at the front line of major change in our environment, communities and economies. The plan also acknowledges the critical need for collaboration, partnership and coalition: "We will work with a range of partners across local, state and federal government, industry, civil society, and community organisations. We will also enter into formal partnerships, sponsorships, agreements, and memorandums of understanding as needed, in addition to informal arrangements and collaborations. Advisory committees will provide specialist advice and guide our work." Have a read (it's very digestible) and lets get ready to rumble!

Upcoming webinar with RACGP: Our Woven Ways: Supporting goal setting with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander parents Thursday 25 July 2024, 7:00–8:00pm AEST Registrations are open for the next webinar with the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP). Continuing on with the case study explored in the third webinar in this series, this fourth webinar will examine ways to support goal setting with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander parents through culturally safe practice. In meaningful goal setting, GPs can listen to the ideas and know-how of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander parents as a basis for making change. This supports the assumption that parents come with histories of doing their best for their children and that they are capable of setting and reaching goals which best support their children. It also ensures that mainstream practice avoids culturally biased or prejudiced practice. Register here 👉 https://lnkd.in/gggrMP68
