To help reduce congestion for cruise and cargo operations, the Port of Galveston broke ground on its cargo infrastructure project, with funding from TxDOT. The recent Texas Legislative Session allocated historic, first-time funding for port infrastructure improvements like this one, which will allow the port to accommodate new business, generate hundreds of new jobs, and lessen the cost of cargo movements. #TxDOTMaritime

Exciting developments at the Port of Virginia! By early 2025, it will become the widest and deepest port on the U.S. East Coast, significantly enhancing its capacity to handle ultra-large container vessels. This $450 million dredging project, part of a $1.4 billion modernization effort, will boost efficiency, reduce emissions, and strengthen relationships across industries. Title: Team Effort to Salvage MV Ever Forthward Following Chesapeake Bay Bridge Incident On March 13, 2023, the cargo ship MV Ever Forthward encountered a significant mishap, crashing into the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel and sustaining a partial grounding. This event not only inflicted substantial damage on this vital bridge but also led to significant disruptions in regional traffic and commerce. In response, a collaborative effort involving the Virginia Port Authority, the U.S. Coast Guard, and Baltimore's own Marine Construction Co., Inc. is underway. These teams are devising a safe and efficient approach to remove the stranded vessel, with the paramount goals of preventing further harm to the bridge and avoiding environmental damage. The complexity of this operation cannot be overstated. With the ship carrying 5,500 containers and its bow lodged beneath the bridge, the task of refloating and removing it requires meticulous planning and execution. It’s a stark reminder of the essential role infrastructure plays in supporting maritime commerce and transportation. As Marine Construction Co., Inc., a company with substantial experience in similar salvage operations, spearheads this effort, the focus is on safeguarding the bridge's structural integrity and minimizing the logistic disruptions caused by the bridge's closure. 🚢 What are your thoughts on the impact such incidents have on local economies and global shipping routes? 🌉 How crucial is it for public and private sectors to collaborate in crisis management involving critical infrastructure? Feel free to share your insights or similar experiences. Let’s discuss the importance of maintaining and protecting our infrastructure to ensure the smooth operation of trade and transportation networks. #MaritimeSafety #Infrastructure #ChesapeakeBay #CargoShip #CrisisManagement #EnvironmentalProtection #MarineOperations

The Port of Virginia is on track to become the widest and deepest port on the U.S. East Coast by early 2025 after a $450 million dredging project in Norfolk Harbor is completed. Ultra-large containerships that can carry over 20,000 twenty-foot equivalent cargo units have become a big money issue for port operators. These ocean vessels challenge the economics of marine servicing because their size limits traffic to one-way, cutting down on the number of ships a terminal can “turn”, while the ports make no money on transit into and out of port.

The Federal Highway Administration will give $148M in grants to offset carbon emissions caused by idling trucks in the nation's ports. This move is a part of the $400M to improve air quality under the Infrastructure Law. This round of funding will go to 11 states and Puerto Rico under the "Reduction of Truck Emissions at Port Facilities Grant Program". Official numbers for some of the states in the first round of funding are: • California - $49.7 million • Texas - $26.9 million • Georgia - $15.3 million • Florida - $10 million • Louisiana - $7.1 million • New Jersey - 2.2 million Overall, this aims to improve the quality of life of the port workers and the people living in proximity to the ports.

A barge tow collided with a freeway bridge in Oklahoma, causing damage to both the vessel and the bridge support. The bridge underwent safety assessments by transportation engineers and was reopened after three hours. Barge collisions are common on American inland waterways due to navigation challenges and strong currents, highlighting the importance of risk assessment to prevent harm to bridge infrastructure. #MarinerNews #MaritimeIndustry #ShippingNews #Shipping #Maritime

To expand on a prior post about the potential impact of a harbor bridge collapse on the access of the main port facilities to the high seas, I designed a map covering the main ports of North America. It is important to underline that this is not a risk evaluation, and in no way does this map indicate if a port is vulnerable to a bridge collapse. It states what would happen if a harbor bridge were to collapse until the channel(s) are cleared. A brief explanation of the classification: >Full. The great majority (if not all) of the port facilities would lose access. >Partial to full. A large share of the port facilities would lose access. >Full or partial. Depending on the harbor bridge involved (more than one harbor bridge), the port would lose full or partial access to its facilities. >Partial. A significant share of the facilities would lose access. >None. There are no harbor bridges or harbor crossings through tunnels. #ports #harbors #bridges #resilience

This shows why it is important to fund transportation and that means more that just having money for large projects. Maintenance and preservation is equally important as is having sufficient funds to pay for the unexpected.
