Today when talking about back to school, we arrive to maybe the most important topic- advocacy! At WeThrive we aim to teach kids to have self advocacy skills, but that can’t always be expected right off the bat. That’s where parents come in- we are our child’s biggest and first advocate! In the school system, this can be a complicated process when there’s lots of new faces and routines. Who do you talk to? How do you best handle this process? Here’s a tip: start with the teacher. If you write a letter to your teacher, this is often something that can be referred to again. Explain to them your child’s niche behaviors and interests, and explain how best to support them as their advocate. #neurodivergent #neurodiversity #backtoschool #chikddevelopment #executivefunctioningstrategies #executivefunction #adhdsupport

I had the opportunity to present at the SYPS Focus on Our Families Symposium. My presentation focused on active advocacy for families. As I prepared for my presentation, I didn't just want to focus on advocacy, because we can advocate in a passive way. There is a difference between active advocacy and passive advocacy. Active advocacy means taking deliberate, proactive steps to ensure your child’s needs are being met, both academically and socially. It involves regular involvement and direct actions to communicate and collaborate with teachers, school staff, and other professionals. Passive advocacy involves a more reactive approach, where parents wait for issues or opportunities to arise and respond as needed. It includes supporting the child but usually in a less hands-on or less frequent manner. There were three questions I expounded upon: What strengths do you see in my child? What does my child need to be successful in your classroom? What supports are available for my child? The three S's: Strengths, Success, Supports. I gave them a list of questions under each category that they can ask their teachers. I wanted to give them a bank of questions from which to choose.
