It was a pleasure to take part in this short free webinar followed by Q&A organised by Sharmila recently. We discussed about natural menopause as a physiological transition and its impact on long term health. We also discussed that some individuals may have early, premature, medical or surgical menopause which can be different. We talked about lifestyle, non-hormonal and hormonal options for improving quality of life and protecting long-term health post menopause based on individual medical history and choice. Sharmila is passionate about providing help and support to individuals who need it during menopause transition through her community group MenopauseSupportCircle. Providing accurate scientific information based on facts to individuals (not based on cherry picking favourable reports or assumptions or personal opinion) is key. Where there is no evidence, it needs to be acknowledged so that individuals can decide their options and make a choice. https://lnkd.in/ewfNNDx3

"Um, is this the place for a post like this?" Heck. yeah. 📉 The US Economy loses more than $26 billion annually due to menopause's impact on working women; $1.8 billion in lost workdays and $24.8 billion in direct medical expenditures (Mayo Clinic, 2023 study) 🥊 Menopause is the most challenging life stage for women in the workplace (Carrot Fertility, 2022 study). And the symptoms (hot flashes, fatigue, mood disorders, memory problems, etc.) can last for ten years! ❓ 73% of women don't treat their menopause symptoms (Bonafide Health, 2021 study) and unfortunately, most medical schools and residency programs don't provide education about menopause..."just 20% of ob-gyn residency programs provide any kind of menopause training. Mostly, the courses are elective. And nearly 80 percent of medical residents admit that they feel 'barely comfortable' discussing or treating menopause." (AARP, 2018 article) You might be saying "whoa, I had no idea". And you're in the overwhelming majority. What can you do? 📖 Educate yourself. Huberman Lab is a great podcast, period. This episode gives an good overview of menopause/perimenopause. 🔦 Shine a light on this. Listen. Talk. As david mcqueen said "this can be hella uncomfortable but I deem it necessary to sit in that discomfort." 👩💼 Get involved at work and see what you can do to make your workplace "menopause friendly". Sounds silly, right?!?! The British Parliament and British organizations like HSBC UK, Unilever UK and West Ham United are making this a reality widespread across the pond. 📲 Call your congressman and senator, leave a message and tell them you want more funding for menopause research. Only 0.03% of NIH Funding goes towards studying perimenopause/menopause, which spans 1/3 of a woman's life. I'm so appreciative of women leaders like Meg McKeen, Imogen Crump, Dr. Gabrielle Lyon, Mary Claire Haver, MD, Karen Tang, MD, MPH and so many others for talking about this.
A new Huberman Lab episode is out now with Mary Claire Haver, MD, on how to navigate menopause and perimenopause.

Strength training is a powerful tool for maintaining and improving bone health during menopause. As estrogen levels decline, the risk of bone loss increases, leading to a higher chance of developing osteoporosis. Incorporating regular strength training into your routine can help counteract this by stimulating bone growth, increasing bone density, and improving overall strength. To learn more about bone health during menopause, watch our previous Menopause Talk with Dr. Kristi DeSapri, a national leader in osteoporosis and menopause management: https://loom.ly/w8cwGHk #menopause #bonehealth #midlife #osteoporosis #strengthtraining #midlife #womenshealth #perimenopause
