When we first met, I asked him quite literally DOZENS of questions about what it's like to be the Chief of Staff for the Texas football program. Having played volleyball in college, my business brain was swirling.   Jared S. Blank, has quickly become one of my favorite people.   "How do you view the Chief of Staff role?" I asked. His answer:   "I look at my role as kind of the old-school point guard. Essentially, I look to position people. Whether they're leaders or whether they're people on my team, my role is to help put them in the best position for success. I get them the ball and then let them shine. I help elevate them and the organization as a whole. I challenge myself to make sure that I understand what everyone's doing so that I can elevate each person and elevate them in front of others. Ultimately, (referencing a Kobe quote) my role is to inspire people so they can be great at whatever they want to do." ...If that's not *Chief of Staff + Sports* I don't know what is. 💪   I can't wait to share this humble, generous, down-to-earth human with you all.   I learned so much from him during our first meeting. Go Gators! Wow, what a game yesterday for the Florida Gators Men’s Baseball Team, who bested the Clemson Tigers (on their home field) to advance to the Men’s College World Series! Resilience, poise, confidence, and execution: the Gators needed it all in order to succeed in the face of such adversity. 💪 For those of you who didn’t watch the game, it was one for the ages. Multiple lead changes and epic highlight plays culminated in a drama-filled, and wildly spectacular (at least for this fan), walk-off Gator win. On both sides of the chalk and from both dugouts, it was a sheer display of talent, focus, determination, and passion — and I feel lucky to have witnessed it. My biggest takeaway from the game though, more so than the win, was in how each team operated during their respective moments of adversity. First Clemson, then Florida, then Clemson again, then finally the Gators in the bottom of the 13th inning. “Tough times don’t last. Las Vegas has become a booming hub for professional sports in recent years, further fueling its growth and appeal: Las Vegas Raiders The NFL's Oakland Raiders relocated to Las Vegas in 2020, and Allegiant Stadium, a state-of-the-art facility, has become a major attraction for both locals and visitors. It hosts not only NFL games but also concerts and other large events. Vegas Golden Knights : The NHL expansion team, Vegas Golden Knights, was established in 2017 and has quickly gained a passionate following. Their success, including reaching the Stanley Cup Finals in their inaugural season and winning it in 2023, has energized the local sports scene. Las Vegas Aces : The Las Vegas Aces, a WNBA team, moved from San Antonio in 2018. They won the WNBA championship in 2022 and have helped further grow the city’s sports culture, particularly with a focus on women’s sports. Major League Baseball : There are ongoing talks about the Oakland Athletics (A’s) potentially relocating to Las Vegas, with plans to build a new stadium near the Strip. This move would bring MLB to the city, adding another layer to its sports expansion. Formula 1 : Starting in 2023, Las Vegas is hosting a Formula 1 race as part of the global circuit, with a track that runs down the iconic Las Vegas Strip. This event is expected to draw international attention and become a staple in the city's sports calendar. Other Sports: Las Vegas has also become a destination for UFC events, boxing matches, and professional soccer matches, further enhancing its reputation as a sports city. As the famous Fred Shero quote goes, “Win today and we walk together forever.” Over the years, it’s become a go-to for championship teams. I’ve had teenagers who couldn’t name Shero or the Broad Street Bullies tell me the quote. While I’m most likely thinking about this today because we’re in the middle of hockey and basketball playoffs, hearing “we walk together forever” reminds me of the work behind a championship team. Each one is different yet shares several key aspects. One such key? Every championship team I’ve been fortunate enough to be around has a person in the locker room who sets the culture and holds the room to a higher standard. It’s not just the coaches. It’s not the stars. Oftentimes it’s someone unheralded on the ice or court who goes above and beyond behind the scenes to reach out and get everyone on board. They might not be in a leadership position, but that is not stopping them from leading and helping create a championship culture. Anyone can be a leader. Years later, that’s the person who gets remembered by the group who accomplishes their championship goal. When an entire group clearly understands and trusts the vision while working towards the same goals, whether in sports or the corporate world, success will be around the corner, even if a work championship may not exist. (Awards do though, which is a post for another day.) Miss that and it’s almost impossible for all the starpower in the world to make up for the disconnect. Being that voice in the room makes a difference between those who say the Shero quote and those who live it. After all, it’s a quote about team culture that at this point will be told forever. #culture #interviews #hockey #teamwork #success
