Today I'm at North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC)'s Large Load Task Force meeting. I was invited to present on our "Era of Flat Power Demand is Over" report. Most of the presentations I've given have engaged with an audience that has concerns about how the grid will be expanded - new transmission and generation - to serve these new customers. But in this meeting, there was a lot of discussion about how what David R. Ball, PE, MBA refers to as "large data centric flexible loads" could affect reliability. In response to relatively mundane disturbances to the grid, such as lightning strikes, voltage disturbances can occur. The large data center's protective equipment may take the facility off the grid to emergency generation, removing a large load from the system. Or there may be a price event that the load responds to by reducing demand. In any case, these variations in load can be challenging to respond to - particularly if many such loads respond in tandem. And there is additional concern because the power grid doesn't have enough detail in its models to study these questions. With individual new load requests at the scale of 2 - 4 GW (seriously, that's huge) challenging what has become a legacy system, what will grid operators do to maintain reliability? Today, we proposed a solution to help ERCOT and the State of Texas offset the projected electric supply shortfall to the greater San Antonio area by sending large emergency generation units to the region.
