Every member of the enlisted medical force will one day transition to civilian life. When they get there, they will likely find it difficult to translate their medical training into meaningful certification or licensure to work in healthcare. Even crazier: Many will not receive the academic credit commensurate to their talent and experience. Example: Six months after I submitted my reciprocity application to Ohio EMS for my paramedic certification, I am still waiting for final approval and certification. Thankfully, this is inconsequential to me as I found employment in higher education immediately upon transition with my advanced degrees and experience. But what if I didn't have those degrees (paramedicine is a technician level career that requires no degree--yet) and could not secure immediate employment because of onerous reciprocity and military credit pathways? Weren't laws supposedly put in place to alleviate this burden on transitioning servicemembers? Never mind the archaic education equivalency pathways that translate my service experience to higher education. Want to know what my advanced training in general anesthesia and surgical amputation translates to in college credit? Undergraduate general education credit. We can do better. I'm thankful for the coalition of support that I am building around Wright State University and Wright-Patterson Air Force Base to raise awareness and build a better tomorrow for transitioning servicemembers. I'm proposing a well defined pathway to apply all relevant military healthcare training and experience to a chosen health profession higher education pathway. None exist. We will build it. I envision an education system where no one who is qualified in a healthcare-related military occupation code/specialty/rate starts at zero. There's too much need to be turning away capable talent. Military medics can address our healthcare workforce shortage. Let them. #armymedicine #afmedicine #navymedicine #militarymedicine #healthcare #education

Champva is free and easier to access care where Tricare costs abd brings a host of challenges. And most importantly Seeing a military or VA provider is optimal because they are trained and observe specific war related illness and injury. These providers unlike civilians can identify clusters and links to military service which inherently helps gain service connected compensation and research funding for better outcomes. Retirement is not worth the risk as benefits keep getting stripped from those who made the commitment. Give my husband and others like him concurrent retirement pay with his VA compensation, it’s not his fault war took away half his career. #concurrentreceipt #restoreretireebenefits #dontgiveourbenefitsaway #militarymedicinematters #supportactitveduty #supportmilfam #supportretirees #restoremilitarymedicine

Retired Military Special Needs Dad || I help military special needs families by highlighting quality of life issues
Civilian providers working at on-installation military treatment facilities (MTF) are critical to providing the #militaryfamily with quality #healthcare and #mentalhealth services. Unfortunately the hiring of experienced #nurses have been paused and DoD is struggling to avoid future downgrades in salary to current nurses. https://lnkd.in/gFV_XMSE This issue only serves to highlight the shortages of medical staff both on-base and in the community, which the #military #specialneeds community has felt due to the amount of specialty care they receive. For #EFMP and SNP families enrolled in the #Autism Care Demonstration in particular, the above article really validates two aspects of healthcare that need to be adhered to: 1️⃣ Provide services at generally accepted standards of care 2️⃣ Ensure the health of the provider network Not following the second aspect results in resource gaslighting as #militaryfamilies throw their hands up in frustration at the benefits that can't be accessed because nobody is taking TRICARE. Not following the first aspect results in lower quality service or a mass exodus of providers leaving because of ethical concerns. Unfortunately, families receiving #ABA are experiencing both which results in a decrease of #readiness, #resilience, and #retention.
