Meet the hard-working CSB students who are employed in their career fields and earning internship credit this Spring! Today, meet Alyssa Wennesheimer! “My name is Alyssa. I am currently a senior with a major in finance and a minor in economics. I recently got married at the end of July, have a four-year-old daughter, work full-time, volunteer in a non-profit, all alongside of going to school full-time. I am currently working as a mortgage underwriter at Stephenson National Bank & Trust (SNBT) which is what I am using for this internship class. I have been working here for seven years, the last six of which were in the mortgage department. I aspire to continue in the mortgage realm with possibly going into mortgage compliance.” “As I stated prior, my internship is my current role at work as a mortgage underwriter at SNBT. As a mortgage underwriter there is a lot within my role that I must complete to be proficient in my position. Some of the duties that are required of me are to determine the risk associated with each loan that comes through on the mortgage side and see what lending product would work best for the client. [...] I am currently developing a new program to launch by the end of February and am training my new assistant underwriter. [...] My position consists of a mix between different areas in the bank, which specializes the position that I am in. I have a mix of loan operations, lending, processing, and compliance.” “My learning expectations are always great in my position, but it is to excel in my position. I am driven to know more and make it a possibility to maintain the cleanest files possible.” “The courses that I have taken have given me a greater view of banking. One of the concepts that I learned had to do with my Gallop profile and understanding the way people view me as I work. [...] Another lesson that assisted with banking was in my Money, Banking, and Financial Markets class." “The goals that I have throughout my internship experience would have to co-align with my annual review goals for the year. [...] The goals that I am going to list are going to be different than someone that is starting an actual internship. The goal I have is to properly train my new underwriting assistant so that I have a proper backup in case I am out. The next would be to continue developing our Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) credits by releasing more programs designed to assist low-income individuals obtain housing. The last goal that I have is to make sure our next audit does not have any findings.” "[...] For my position, it is providing the right services to our clients to make sure that they get their dream home, or help them clean up their debts. It also co-aligns with the goals that were listed above."

The Arvest Summer Intern Program is now open for 2025 applications! This paid opportunity spans across our four-state footprint (AR, KS, MO, and OK) and offers flexibility for in-office, hybrid, and remote work. It's a wonderful opportunity to learn about Arvest and an area of specialty (banking, mortgage, wealth management, finance, HR, IT, marketing, etc.). Reflecting on the impact of internships, I recall valuable insights from leading Stone Ward's Camp Reality intern program. Larry Stone emphasized that discovering what you don't enjoy is as valuable as finding your passion. If someone completes an internship and decides they don't like advertising, that's still a success. They won't take one of the few advertising positions in our small advertising community that someone else desperately wants. And if they have a great experience and were a stellar intern, it's likely you'll hire that person or work with them again at some point in their professional career. Larry's perspective is something that has stayed with me and is a reason I highly encourage internships in an industry or company you are interested in. AE @ Gong | Helping SDRs promote to AE through proven outbound systems, personal branding, and ethical selling practices | SDR to AE in 10 months
When I graduated from college in 2019, I had no idea what I wanted to do. I never had an internship, Had mediocre grades, And had no job prospects. I landed in sales by accident, Essentially just taking a job so I could start making money and paying off my student loans. I didn't expect to make a career out of this. I wasn't even very good at it at the beginning. But I had been raised as an athlete. And as an athlete, I learned work ethic. It wasn't in my bones to half-ass anything. I figured, If I was going to be doing this for 8+ hours a day, I needed to excel at it. Otherwise, what kind of life was I leading? Did I really want to suck at something I was spending more than a third of my life doing? I already knew the answer to that question. So while I struggled at the beginning of my career, I kept at it. I worked my tail off to be the best. By the time I left that job, I had been promoted 3 times, And was the youngest person in the company to be in the position I was in. At that point, I loved sales. Because we tend to love what we're good at. So here's the lesson: No one has everything figured out. Don't feel like you need your entire life path drawn out from the jump. Instead, just choose a path. Trust that everything you've learned so far in your life will guide you the right way. See how it goes. If it works out, Then great. If not, You can always pivot. Don't just sit on the sidelines. Get out there and do things. That's where things actually get figured out.
