#onthisday On July 2, 1777, #Vermont became the first territory in what would become the #UnitedStates to abolish slavery. This historic decision was made when Vermont adopted its constitution, which included a clause that prohibited slavery. The Vermont Constitution stated that no adult should be held in servitude unless bound by personal consent or by law for the payment of debts, fines, or similar obligations. This landmark move was significant as it predated the abolition of slavery in the United States by nearly a century and set a progressive precedent for other states and territories. #Vermont's action was part of a broader context of increasing abolitionist sentiment in the late #18th #century, driven by Enlightenment ideals of liberty and equality. The state's decision highlighted the growing resistance to the institution of slavery and laid the groundwork for future legislative and social efforts to end slavery throughout the United States.

Enjoyed the GOVChats: Georgia + Colorado discussion! I want to commend Jasmyne Epps for emphasizing how accessibility isn't just about physical disabilities, but situational as well (sensory, motor, cognitive, environmental, etc.) This perspective of accessibility is often overlooked during the design and development process. How can we do better? By spreading awareness. Share with your designers, developers, and project managers. Let's do our part to make websites and applications more accessible to everyone. To learn more about situational disabilities, check out this article: https://lnkd.in/gZ7ZK_F5.

Reflecting on 40 Years Since the Brighton Bombing Today marks the 40th anniversary of the Brighton Bombing at the Conservative Party Conference in 1984—a tragic event that aimed to shatter democracy through violence. Looking back further, I also recall the 1979 bombing that claimed the life of Airey Neave in Westminster. And more recently, we faced the heartbreaking loss of Jo Cox in 2016. These moments serve as painful reminders that violence has no place in politics. While we may hold differing views and engage in lively debate, our disagreements must never diminish the humanity we share. In a democracy, it is the ballot box—not acts of violence—that determines our future. Let’s continue to champion respect, dialogue, and understanding, no matter how divided opinions may seem. Democracy thrives only when we uphold peace and protect the right of all voices to be heard. #BrightonBombing40Years #DemocracyNotViolence #RespectInPolitics #JoCox #AireyNeave #BallotBoxNotViolence #UKPolitics #NeverForget #PeaceAndDemocracy #DemocraticValues

What can we do in our communities to ensure the unhoused are not facing additional challenges obtaining permanent housing due to arrests associated with living on the street? • Communities should engage with local law enforcement to understand their policies and intentions moving forward. •Create and maintain relationships with local law enforcement. •Designate drop off sites for police officers encountering the homeless in lieu of arrest. •Address the lack of available and affordable housing in communities, along with access to funding and support. •Local social service agencies and CoC’s should continue to collaborate, partner, and focus on implementing action plans. •Expand shelter capacity. •Continue to make emergency shelters welcoming and ensure they are filled with necessary and engaging programming. •Inceased legislative advocacy. Your thoughts?

Frederick Douglass: abolitionist, orator, and advocate for economic empowerment. He went to Rochdale a slave, left a free man and the ties he had formed helped to pave way for the beginning of the cooperative movement. As we celebrate the #BlackHistoryMonth, let’s continue his legacy by promoting the cooperative principles of economic empowerment for all. Interested in Fredrick’s story?
