We are thrilled to announce the time and date of the next University of Leeds Fashion Marketing and Management Research Group & Textile and Fashion Design Research Group seminar, which will take place on 1st July from 3pm to 4:30pm on Zoom. This seminar is free, and open to the public. The first half of the seminar will be delivered by Professor Youn-Kyung Kim in a session titled ‘Research Trends in Fashion Retailing'. The aim of this presentation is to unveil emerging trends in fashion retailing and introduce pertinent research areas. Consumers increasingly are shifting away from merely purchasing commodities; they seek products and services that add enrich their lives and contribute to society. In their shopping and consumption experiences, they are seeking both emotional and practical benefits. In response to these consumer trends, future research can explore themes such as emotion, technology integration, and social sustainability. Furthermore, the presentation will include advice on conducting research effectively and enhancing acceptance rates in journals. The second half will be delivered by Professor Kate Goldsworthy in a session titled 'Circular & Sustainable Textiles Research.' This talk presents a range of funded projects over a 20 year timeframe. With a focus on practice growing from early experience in industry that led to a return to academia to study a PhD and ultimately to large collaborative research projects, the presentation will map developments in the field of circular design research as well as a personal journey from commercial textile designer to academic researcher. GFC2023 has called researchers to reflect upon citizenship and how each decision maker within the Fashion System may contribute to a more sustainable Fashion, to Fashion for the Common Good. In the Book of Proceedings coming soon GFC shares different perspectives from all over the world. DESIGNERS AS DECISION MAKERS Daria Casciani and and Wang Wei from POLIMI - Politecnico di Milano propose Exploring Eco-Design Strategies for E-textiles in sports performance applications The rapid growth of e-textiles poses a challenge in terms of potential waste at the End of Life (EoL) of these complex products of the fashion and apparel industry, underscoring the importance of early eco-design choices. This study aims to conduct a literature review on e-textiles applied in the sportswear sector, identifying eco-design strategies that have been applied at each phase of the fashion supply and value chain focusing in particular on design, manufacturing, use, and  EoL management. Further, the paper discusses the product-service-system design-driven innovations that encompass materials, components and fabrics selection and experimentation along with technologies supporting better manufacturing toward cradle-to-cradle approaches. As our technological needs advance, so should our clothing. In a world questioning its relationship to #fashion, waste and pollution, the #avantgarde cannot be only aesthetic. #SmartTextiles for #SmartFashion explores energy production in clothing. An emerging technology that has the potential to radically shift the way clothing is designed and worn. Dr. Fatemeh Mokhtari at the Institute for Frontier Materials, Deakin University, developed an all-fabric #piezoelectricgenerator. Compact, flexible and mass-manufacturable, the braided generator can be easily integrated into clothing and accessories. In this study, I explore the technology’s potential to inform the design of the clothing with which it is integrated, as not only a functional component, but one that is aesthetic and relevant. This project seeks to propose a higher-performing, and more sustainable, approach to fashion. The world doesn’t need more clothing, it needs better clothing. By working with cutting-edge technologies, we can create fashion for the future. A few thoughts on the sale of Swedish Fashion Council by Svensk Handel to Lili Assefa: It’s concerning that an industry organisation falls in the hands of a private individual. The question becomes: will SFC even function as an industry organisation? Or will they lean into becoming an innovation hub – functioning as an incubator for avantgarde designers and organising Fashion X? The industry needs a unifying organisation.
