When hearing about microplastics, most people think of the plastic soup. However, microplastics are everywhere. Irene Maltagliati, PhD candidate and scientific coordinator at the Rudolf Agricola School for Sustainable Development UG, identified over 30 behaviours that emit or expose us to microplastics. Having found microplastics in lungs, hearts and even placentas, it can be quite a scary topic. With her research she tries to identify what motivates persons to change their behavior in a more sustainable way, while working together with many different parties. This collaboration aims to strengthen regional value chains and enhance sustainability in Baden-Württemberg’s fibre industry. 🌱 Eco-Friendly Shift The NaturalFIBER BW project is committed to transitioning from a fossil-based economy to a green economy, focusing on the cultivation of natural fibres like hemp, flax, and nettle to support regional biodiversity and local economic growth. Webinar: Utilization of hemp in new business models - 18th April 2024, 14.30 to 16.00 Industrial hemp is one of them most interesting plants providing strong fibers for textile, building materials, composites e.g., besides high value products from the hemp top. Recently new breakthroughs have come with utilization of hemp fibers in new business models, such as insulation materials from EKOLUTION in Sweden and launching of the hemp chair by Normann Copenhagen, processed in Denmark. The unique hemp plant has high yields, can be grown in Denmark as well as Sweden, the whole plant can be used in a number of sustainable products all with negative CO2-print and with a circular value chain. “How can we be sure that environmental natural fibre levels are not as harmful as, or more harmful than, synthetic fibre levels? 🌱 🌎 Simply: we cannot, at least for the moment.” Read this article from King's College London highlighting Matteo Gallidabino & the IMPACT+ teams recent paper: ‘Natural Fibers: Why Are They Still the Missing Thread in the Textile Fiber Pollution Story?’ Matteo explains that natural fibres may be less biodegradable than expected and, on the other hand, that they may significantly impact the health of ecosystems. ♻ The team express the urgency for environmental scholars to give greater focus to the environmental sustainability issues associated with natural textile fibres used in fashion. “Exclusion of natural fibres in fibre pollution research risks promoting misinformed sustainability policies and messages.
