Most of the materials used by the fashion, textile, and apparel industry come from farms, forests, or fossil fuels – all of which have a range of environmental and social implications. Launched at the Textile Exchange Conference in October, the Materials Impact Explorer (MIE) is a free, open-source tool designed to help brands understand the location-specific risks linked to their raw material sourcing decisions. The tool provides tailored recommendations on: 🌱 Assess risks 🌱 Understand opportunities for impact reduction 🌱 Supporting local and global sustainability initiatives Today, we have launched the latest risk categories, forests and air pollution, alongside pre-existing categories of climate, freshwater, and biodiversity. Sustainability is… a foam rubber heart. ❤️ We’ve all seen examples of greenwashing, where bad products can be dressed up to look good, but is there a name for something intrinsically good that is made to look bad? I think I’ll call it Sh*twashing. Here are a few classic examples... 💩-Travelling by private jet to a climate conference 💩-Individually plastic-wrapped ecological vegetables. 💩-Charging your EV with a diesel generator. Laughable but true, and the list goes on... Here’s one from the trade show industry… A local authority exhibited at a large show here in Sweden, celebrating the fact that they had joined a great climate initiativ. 🎉 Of course, something this good this should be celebrated, so they came up with the slogan “WE ❤️ SUSTAINABILITY”. So far so good. However... The slogan was printed on a large plastic single-use banner. 🤔 In the spirit of celebration they decorated their stand in balloons. 😳 And so that visitors to their stand would remember how good this sustainability initiative was, they gave away… a red foam rubber heart that smelt distinctly of chemicals. 😡 To guess by the amount of boxes they had, about 3000 of them…. ❗I had to ask what the f**k they were thinking. ❗ But being a local authority, someone else did the thinking and someone else chose the cheapest (contracted) supplier... 🙈 🙉 🙊 In short, their message was stripped of all credibility by the messenger. That’s Sh*twashing. ✅ If you are going to talk the talk, then you have to walk the walk. ✅If your message is sustainability, make your stand sustainable! ✅If in doubt call React Sustainable Expo What examples of Sh*twashing do you have?

EVP People, Communications & Transformation with Baker Hughes | Human Resources Leader | Aspiring Modern Elder
As the world comes together to celebrate #EarthDay2024, I'm reminded of some sobering facts Dana Thomas shared during the Baker Hughes Annual Meeting 2024 about the environmental impact of fast fashion. Here are some stats to keep in mind: - The apparel industry’s global emissions will increase by 50% by 2030. - The fashion industry is responsible for 20% of global waste water. - Of the 100 billion garments made annually, 87% end up in landfills or incinerators - only 1% are recycled. - Nearly 10% of microplastics dispersed in the ocean each year come from textiles. In honor of Earth Day, I invite you learn more about how different industries are championing sustainability, here: https://lnkd.in/gDtNbMKA. #BHAM2024 #EarthDay #Sustainability #BakerHughes #Energy #EnergyTechnology #EnergyTransition #WeAreBakerHughes #EnergizingChange

Sustainability in Everyday Life: The Science Behind Small Changes I've been delving into the science of sustainability and how even small changes in our daily routines can have a significant impact on our environment. Research shows that reducing plastic use, conserving water, and supporting local products can lower our carbon footprint and mitigate climate change. For instance, studies indicate that if every household reduced their water usage by just 10%, we could save billions of gallons of water annually. 🌱Did you know that shifting to a plant-based diet can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 70%? And using reusable bags can save millions of plastic bags from polluting our oceans each year. These small steps, grounded in scientific research, can lead to substantial environmental benefits.

Sustainability is about many things. Looking at our personal commutes and optimizing our delivery routes. Going paperless. Using local suppliers. Giving back to our communities. In a way, it is simple because there are endless small gestures we can make to show more kindness towards our planet and each other. Did you know that without proper disposal procedures in place, 50% of all lubricants used worldwide end up in the environment? The main reason is accidental release. By using biodegradable lubricants, accidental spills are broken down easily into soil and water. When it comes to disposing of your empty containers or your used oil, check your local guidelines as each province has its own system. Antifreeze, for example, is something that should not be thrown in the trash because it contains ethylene glycol. We need these products but by taking the time to do a bit of research and doing the right thing, we can minimize our impact.

🌍 Reflecting on Sustainability: Embracing Awareness and Action 🌱 The fact that our collective understanding of sustainability has grown significantly in recent times is surely a long-awaited relief for the planet. However, it's evident that this awareness has come later than needed. Issues like climate change, environmental degradation, and social inequality have long been pressing concerns, yet got addressed only to a certain extent. Why did it take us so long to recognize these challenges? Perhaps because the consequences of unsustainable practices were not immediately apparent or widely acknowledged, probably not until the pandemic. Now, though, we face undeniable evidence of their impact on our planet and communities. The realization that we must act decisively is a critical step forward. It's about acknowledging past oversights and committing to meaningful change. From reducing carbon footprints to promoting ethical consumption, each of us can contribute to a sustainable future. I firmly believe it's crucial to look beyond simple actions like bringing your own bag or avoiding plastic bottles. Addressing sustainability requires a comprehensive examination of every aspect of our lives to identify and replace synthetic materials. Every decision we make—whether it's about consumption, usage, or the disposal of products and services—plays a vital role in shaping a sustainable future. More power to us to harness this newfound awareness as a catalyst for action. By embracing sustainable practices in our daily lives and advocating for systemic change, we can create a world where environmental stewardship and social equity are prioritized. Together, we can make a difference. It's never too late to start. 🌿💚 #Sustainability #ClimateAction
