How emerging photographers can stand out with photo books. Photo books have exploded in the past 20 years thanks to the internet & the self publishing revolution. Despite the saturation of photo books in the market place, they are still one of the best ways for emerging photographers to put their work out there & gain recognition. Photographers often focus on competitions to gain exposure. Work that needs time to be appreciated has no chance in single image or series competitions which receive thousands of entries. Photo book specific competitions receive a fraction relative to the image only call outs. This is due to the fact that producing a photo book takes more time & effort. You can't find out about a photo book competition a week before the deadline, scour your back catalogue of images and put a submission together the same way you can a regular photography competition. The high bar for entry weeds out all of the photographers who for any number of reasons haven't produced a photo book. So when you do enter a photo book competition, there are hundreds of entries as opposed to thousands. Photo book competitions (eg. Dummy Award & similar) also produce a short list of entries. So even if you your book doesn't win a prize, it might be short listed. The chance of being in a short list of 50 out of 300 is better odds than 1st, 2nd, or 3rd out of 5000 plus images. If you're a photographer and haven't considered the opportunities photo books can offer, perhaps it's time to think about it. #photobook #contemporaryphotography #artworld

📸 𝐏𝐡𝐨𝐭𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐡𝐢𝐜 𝐄𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐬: 𝐁𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐀𝐮𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐲 Should photographers be allowed to edit their images? And if yes, to what extent is okay to do so before it can be considered deceptive? 1) 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 🌟 Below is a photo I shot recently. The left is the unedited 𝐫𝐚𝐰 image, and on the right are some adjustments I made using Photoshop. Do you think the photo on the right should still be considered “𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥” even though it’s been edited? Turns out, the answer isn’t as simple as a “𝐲𝐞𝐬” or “𝐧𝐨”. 2) 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐑𝐚𝐰 𝐯𝐬. 𝐄𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐃𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐦𝐦𝐚 📷 The dilemma of “photographic edits” has been around for a long time, even going back to the days of black-and-white photography. Today though, with the widespread popularity of AI-based editing tools, it feels like a given that just about every photo we see online will be enhanced or adjusted in some way. But it gets even more complicated. 3) 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐑𝐚𝐰 𝐏𝐡𝐨𝐭𝐨𝐬 🎨 Professional photographers often pride their cameras on their ability to capture detailed “raw” photos. These allow for a ton of depth when it comes to editing them later on. In some cases, photographers can completely the lighting and mood of an image. 4) 𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐃𝐫𝐚𝐰 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐋𝐢𝐧𝐞? 🤔 So, where does the line get drawn, and who gets to draw it? Well, as is often the case in the world of art, we each draw our own lines. It’s often hard to truly point out when an image has been edited to the point that it’s no longer considered “𝐩𝐡𝐨𝐭𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐡𝐲”, and has instead crossed over into “𝐝𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐫𝐭”. And that’s okay! 5) 𝐄𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭 📝 As long as your goal is not to deceive viewers with your adjustments, they are perfectly fine. Especially if they help to further enhance the mood and message you’re trying to get across with your photo. But, there are always exceptions and differing opinions. What do you think about this? I’d love to know! #photography #photoediting #colorgrading

Color and Editing Style--Sometimes clients will ask photographers, "What is your editing style." It can be confusing when looking at different photographers to tell what is going on and how to choose the right photographer for you. I would say my "style" is true colors meaning I do not use filters or editing techniques to change the colors. When I was just starting my journey with digital photography, I experimented with different filters and editing styles and came to the realize that I just did not like the look. I prefer authenticity. Don't get me wrong, filters, etc. might be another photographer's "style," and a client might prefer that "light and airy" or "dark and moody" look. Different things resonate with different people. I have just found my preference is for the color as it is. #authenticity #truecolor #weddingphotography #saratogaphotographers #weddingphotos #beyourbrand #professionalphotographers #upstateweddingphotographers

𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑻𝒓𝒖𝒆 𝑽𝒂𝒍𝒖𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝑷𝒓𝒐𝒇𝒆𝒔𝒔𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒂𝒍 𝑷𝒉𝒐𝒕𝒐𝒈𝒓𝒂𝒑𝒉𝒚 📸 Have you ever wondered why professional photography costs more than just the click of a shutter button? It's not just a phone camera after all. Let's unfold the tapestry that makes up the intricate art and business of photography. Imagine this: Before a single picture is taken, a professional photographer has already invested in a high-caliber camera, premium lenses, and state-of-the-art lighting and grip gear. The dollar figures add up quickly – but so does the quality of the image captured. 𝐓̲𝐡̲𝐞̲ ̲𝐢̲𝐧̲𝐯̲𝐞̲𝐬̲𝐭̲𝐦̲𝐞̲𝐧̲𝐭̲ ̲𝐝̲𝐨̲𝐞̲𝐬̲𝐧̲'̲𝐭̲ ̲𝐬̲𝐭̲𝐨̲𝐩̲ ̲𝐚̲𝐭̲ ̲𝐞̲𝐪̲𝐮̲𝐢̲𝐩̲𝐦̲𝐞̲𝐧̲𝐭̲. Behind every stunning photo is a powerful computer system with color-calibrated monitors, ensuring that the hues you see in print match the vision and reality. 𝐁̲𝐮̲𝐭̲ ̲𝐭̲𝐡̲𝐞̲ ̲𝐦̲𝐨̲𝐬̲𝐭̲ ̲𝐬̲𝐢̲𝐠̲𝐧̲𝐢̲𝐟̲𝐢̲𝐜̲𝐚̲𝐧̲𝐭̲ ̲𝐢̲𝐧̲𝐯̲𝐞̲𝐬̲𝐭̲𝐦̲𝐞̲𝐧̲𝐭̲? 🅣🅘🅜🅔. The thousands of hours of learning, practicing, and perfecting the craft that professional photographers put in is what truly sets them apart. It's this dedication that enables them to capture not just an image, but a moment, a memory, and a message that resonates. So, the next time you see a quote from a professional photographer, remember that you're not just paying for a 'snap'—you're investing in an artist's time, gear, skills, and vision.
