Yesterday I was fortunate to be asked to do the #keynote talk for World Textile Information Network (WTiN). Aside from the small issue of thinking it was a panel until a few hours before hand! I pulled something together, which hopefully was informative! What I really wanted to press home was that before looking into what existing materials to use, we need to understand where a business sits. Because nothing ticks all boxes. If we want to be ethical (fair and transparent supply chain) and sustainable (not taking more than we need or doing excess harm) there’s #hemp. If you want to sit between sustainable and circular (ensuring something can have another life of equal value) that’s where synthetics sit. If you sit between circular and regenerative (giving back more than you take) it’s wool. If you sit between #regenerative and #ethical it’s organic cotton and bio based. I will be working on some video form pieces to expand on the conversation yesterday. Greenwashing alert! 🚨 A brand advertises its commitment to sustainability in big letters right at the top of the product page: → “There's nothing more environmentally friendly than a [product] you'll keep for the rest of your life.” But then you keep reading the product page, and you find: → “To guarantee a truly durable [clothing product], we've selected organic cotton woven into a thick, resistant weft. It is this fabric and its artisanal craftsmanship that ensures the [product] will keep its shape and stay with you for a long time to come. And to make things even better, [the product] is guaranteed for life against all manufacturing defects.” “Guaranteed for life against all manufacturing defects”?! Sorry to tell you, but this is just the law here. And then you check the GTC, and you confirm: → ”The legal warranty only covers manufacturing and/or component defects (…). This warranty does not cover damage caused by (…) water or ordinary wear and tear.” I mean… really?! A product guaranteed for life except against ordinary wear and tear, I’m sure we could do better than that…?! In case you missed it, with all that's been going on with the #CSDDD... Lawmakers in the European Parliament have taken a significant step towards reducing waste from the textile and food sectors. As ESG Today notes, below, the Parliament has approved a series of proposals that aim to address the environmental and climate impacts of these resource-intensive sectors. The measures include binding food waste reduction targets for EU member states, as well as requiring fashion brands and textile producers to pay for the collection and recycling of clothing and footwear. This move is part of the European Commission's proposed revision of the Waste Framework, which was unveiled in July 2023. The Commission has identified the textile and food sectors as two of the top resource-intensive sectors causing significant negative environmental externalities. #esg #fastfashion

[Oeko-Tex Sees 21% Increase in Certificates and Labels] Sustainability standards certification organization Oeko-Tex said it issued more than 43,000 certificates and labels during its most recent fiscal year. The number represents a 21 percent increase for the period between July 1, 2022, and June 30, 2023 over the prior fiscal year. Among its certifications and labels, the Made in Green product label recorded the strongest growth at 52 percent. Oeko-Tex also launched two new certifications during the fiscal year that focus on cooperation with numerous parties at each level of the global supply chain. The Oeko-Tex Responsible Business certification supports textile and leather companies in preventing negative effects from their internal business operations, supply chains and broader business relationships. The certification also includes a tool that allows businesses to address due diligence requirements and increasing global expectations. The Oeko-Tex Organic Cotton program allows brands to work with a global network of certified companies from cultivation to finished product to facilitate sourcing chemicals, materials and business partners. Over the past year, Oeko-Tex also has focused on partnerships with multi-stakeholder initiatives to include as many different perspectives as possible. The organization partnered with the ZDHC Foundation in the Netherlands to promote sustainable chemical management. And Oeko-Tex became a part of the ISEAL community, a network managed by the London-based ISEAL organization, which focuses on sustainable and fair trade practices. This past fiscal year, Oeko-Tex also issued a general ban on the use of per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) in textiles, leather and shoes certified by Standard 100, Leather Standard and Eco Passport. Oeko-Tex also surpassed the milestone of 1,000 STeP-certified production facilities, laying a groundwork that it says will allow it to continue to grow in the coming years. The "Better Cotton" lie? 🌿 How textile giants like H&M try to avoid responsibility. In the wake of H&M’s recent woes, it’s time to address the elephant in the room. The fashion giant, like many others, has pointed fingers at certification systems for their failures. But let’s peel back the layers and examine the choices they made. 1. Choosing Certification Systems: H&M actively chose the certification systems they operate under. They weren’t coerced into it. So when things go awry, accountability rests squarely on their shoulders. The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) stands out as a robust alternative. It covers the entire supply chain, ensuring ethical practices from farm to fashion. H&M could have opted for GOTS, but they didn’t. Why? 🧐 2. Beyond Cotton Production Recycling cotton deserves the spotlight. It’s a game-changer. By repurposing existing textiles, we reduce the strain on land and resources. H&M should champion this cause. Product durability matters too. Fast fashion’s ephemeral nature contributes to waste. H&M could lead by designing longer-lasting pieces made to be reused and recycled, encouraging consumers to buy less but better.🍃 3. The Complex Crop Conundrum: Cotton demands vast tracts of land, often leading to deforestation - not to mention the enormous amounts of water and pesticides currently used for that crop. This is a known fact. H&M chose to hide behind an iffy certification, and now that it blew up in their face, they seek responsibility elsewhere. 💥 H&M, it’s time to pivot. 🔀 Acknowledge your choices, embrace better certifications, and prioritize designing your products (or services) in coherence with the circular economy.
