Everybody perceives things differently… Some may see this picture and only see a sliced green bell pepper while others see the face of the man that went the distance with Apollo. This can also be true when looking for new career opportunities. There are many transitioning service members who in the recent past signed up for specific transitioning programs or skillBridge programs because they were perceived to be great opportunities based on optics, but then once they actually graduated from the programs, they weren’t able to actually get gainful employment. Don’t get me wrong. It is absolutely valuable to gain testimonies and feedback from folks who previously transitioned when you’re getting into the market, especially if you’re learning a new industry. There was something that I learned as a wing IG inspector, “trust but validate”. Taking the extra time to actually track down and validate that the opportunity you’re looking at has the outcomes that you’re looking for. For example, skillbridge employers who have allocated headcount to be able to actually hire service members post internship. Not a program that promises to teach you what you need to get a job, but a program that doesn’t just teach you what you need but also has the intent and the headcount to actually hire. I have come across so many skillbridge folks that messaged me on the side because the program they jumped into didn’t amount to employment at the end, but they jumped into those programs because they were going off testimonials and perceptionsof other people without actually researching the outcomes that program delivers at large. When targeting employers for #Dodskillbridge opportunities, it is valuable to assess the following things: 🏆is the employer going to give you the training that you need to be successful? 🏆is the employer going to position you to gain fulltime employment? 🏆Does the company have a reputation of actually hiring the people they host? 🏆Does the employee offer the benefits that your family needs? 🏆Does your employer have a reputation of longevity with its employees? for example the average employee tends to stay XX number of years. 🏆Does the culture of the company flow with your personal values? If you have not had the opportunity to engage with Hiring Our Heroes, Verizon, or 50strong as a transitioning servicemember or military spouse…these are entities that focus on actual positive outcomes. They are tracking the metrics and helping move the needle to positive outcomes for those who engage with them. Check em’ out! #military #veteran #employment #outcomes #perception

For 22 years, Gabriella was busy raising three sons- volunteering at various organizations, fundraising, tutoring, running a Cub Scout Pack, serving as a Merit Badge Counselor and much more. As Gabriella was sending her last son off to college, she knew it was time to start a new chapter. “It was time for me to find something new and to utilize my engineering background, work, and volunteer experience in an appropriately challenging role.” Gabriella joined Northrop Grumman seven years ago as an original member of the iReturn program. During her time at Northrop Grumman, leadership saw how much Gabriella had to offer and continually provided her stretch opportunities which have led to personal and career growth. “The managers and mentors who I’ve worked with over the past seven years are the ones who really have made the difference. My first manager never let me doubt myself and encouraged me with ever increasingly challenging assignments. I now mentor and encourage others around me, so they, too, can become the best that they can be.” Gabriella’s advice to anyone thinking about reentering the workplace is to jump at the opportunity! “The transition back will take a bit of time, but Northrop Grumman and its employees are here to support that transition and to enable you to shine. I have had wonderful managers and mentors who have encouraged and guided me over the last seven years, and I have accomplished far more than I ever could have imagined. Some days when I’m talking through something technical with my team, I stop and think, ‘Wow, who would have thought that I could be doing this!’” Are you thinking about returning to work after a 2+ year career break? Check out our iReturn Careers site for more information on the program and how to apply. #iReturn #CareerBreak #ReturntoWork #Community #EmptyNest
