The electricity crisis in Pakistan stands as a stark illustration of governance failures, flawed strategic choices, inefficient planning, and rampant corruption within the electricity sector. Astonishingly, the cost per unit of electricity in Pakistan surpasses that of Norway, shedding light on the mismanagement plaguing the industry. Though electricity consumption per GDP in Pakistan slightly surpasses that of Afghanistan, it remains among the lowest in South Asia and Asia at large. While Pakistan's installed electricity generation capacity reached almost 42,000 MW by 2022, demand hasn't kept pace. A few years ago, peak demand was 31,000 MW, but transmission capacity limited actual delivery to 22,000 MW, resulting in a daily shortfall of 9,000 MW. However, the current situation is even more concerning. Electricity demand has dropped to around 25,000 MW, but a daily shortfall of 6,000 MW persists. This decline in demand suggests a decrease in economic activity, particularly in residential and small industrial sectors. This, in turn, has contributed to Pakistan's low GDP growth rate of 2%, lagging behind neighboring countries. The root of this crisis traces back to the late 1990s when Pakistan ill-advisedly embraced Independent Power Producers (IPPs), setting off a path of self-destruction. IPPs, operating under agreements with the government, receive capacity charges even for the electricity that remains unutilized. This fact is undeniably shocking and disgraceful for every citizen of Pakistan: each year, Independent Power Producers (IPPs) in the country siphon off nearly Rs 1.3 trillion or $4.6 billion in Capacity Charges for 19,557 MW of electricity production, yet not a single MW is generated. #pakistan #pakistaneconomy
