Efforts: Vietnam's Coastal Protection and Resilience Project (World Bank, 2021). Thailand: Issue: Coastal erosion affects 17% of the coastline. Initiative: Thailand's Climate Change Master Plan (Thai Government, 2022). Philippines: Concern: Over 50% of the population lives in coastal areas exposed to typhoons. Action: Mangrove restoration projects (DENR, 2023). Indonesia: Threat: Jakarta, Indonesia's capital, faces severe subsidence due to over-extraction of groundwater. Response: National Action Plan for Climate Change Adaptation (Indonesian Ministry of Environment, 2022). Malaysia: Risk: Sea level rise endangers critical infrastructure in low-lying areas.Initiative: Malaysia's Green Technology Master Plan (MITI, 2023). 🌍💧 I attended an enlightening panel discussion on "Embracing a Circular Water Economy" at the Singapore International Water Week! 🌊 Did you know over 75% of Asia is water insecure, and over 90% of the region’s population faces a water crisis? This stark reality underscores the urgency for sustainable water management. The panel explored how the public and private sectors can collaborate to drive sustainable practices throughout the value chain. We delved into policies and programs that promote and govern water conservation in the private sector. Businesses are adopting effective water management strategies to reduce, reuse, and recycle water, contributing significantly to water resilience and sustainability. 🌱💧 Private sector companies have a crucial role in realizing water sustainability in the region. ⭐Happening today at the Singapore International Water Week (SIWW): Workshop on the Successful Sustainable Coastal and Urban Resilience in Southeast Asia! 📅The #SIWW is taking place this week, June 18th - 22nd and is a global platform to share and co-create innovative water, coastal and flood solutions. The workshop is happening today, Wednesday June 19th, from 1100-1300 SGT and is organised by the Netherlands Innovation Network Singapore, Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Singapore, Partners for Water and EcoShape. 🤝At the workshop participants will be invited to share and gain insights on enabling conditions for implementation of innovative hybrid and Nature-based Solutions and work on the needs for successful design, financing and implementation of these solutions in specific example cases. 💬Small groups will work on a case and discuss key questions, utilizing EcoShape enablers to further the successful implementation of Nature-based Solutions: • Technological and system knowledge: What could be suitable concepts and is there potential for natural processes to be used (BwN)? • Stakeholder engagement and capacity building: How could we involve governmental stakeholders and communities and make effects of adopted measures positive? How to involve the community and increase participation? • Management, monitoring and maintenance: How to make maintenance strategies part of the process? • Institutional embedding: How to implement BwN in the specific context of norms and regulations? How to connect to international enablers (Paris Agreement, SDG's etc.)? • Business case and financing: How can you work with international financing institutes and/or attract private money? RDI proudly participated as a Panelist at the 10th World Water Forum 2024 in Bali. Representing RDI on May 23, 2024, Dr. Saut Sagala, our esteemed Senior Research Fellow, delivered an impactful presentation at the China Pavilion, supported by UNESCO Beijing. His presentation, "Urban Planning and Design Adaptation to the Water Challenge," addressed crucial urban water issues such as floods, scarcity, and pollution, highlighting necessary actions for enhancing resilient water management in cities. Dr. Sagala highlighted the universal vulnerability -- noting that all cities, big or small, are at risk from water-related hazards exacerbated by climate change. He emphasized the importance of strategic partnerships, advocating for strong collaboration between policymakers, development partners, and local communities to address these challenges effectively. Additionally, Dr. Sagala proposed actions to enhance water security in cities, including implementing robust risk assessment models, adopting climate-informed zoning and building codes, and integrating smart water management systems. These strategies aim to strengthen urban resilience and promote sustainable water management in response to growing climate threats. The session also featured opening remarks from Shahbaz Khan PhD, DSc, Director of UNESCO Regional Office for East Asia, and valuable contributions from other experts, such as Dr. Ai Sugiura, Prof. Luo Yufeng, Prof. Mu Jianxing, and Dr. Mamoru Miyamoto, who shared lessons on emerging paradigms for water sustainability from the East Asia region. These discussions provided a platform for exchanging perspectives and solutions, underscoring the shared challenges faced globally and the need for cooperative action. This session provided an opportunity to share perspectives, challenges, and solutions from a wide range of viewpoints. What has been implemented in Indonesia can serve as a lesson for addressing water problems in China and vice versa. We are all aware that collaboration is key to solving pressing issues that know no boundaries. The launch of The Southeast Asia Partnership for Adaptation through Water (SEAPAW), launched in collaboration with the World Economic Forum, brought together decision-makers from business, government, and civil society to accelerate Southeast Asia’s readiness to adapt to the impact of climate change by shedding light on the urgent need for water action. Our infographic, based on roundtable discussions with senior leaders from organisations such as PUB, Singapore's National Water Agency, Mastercard Center for Inclusive Growth, The World Bank, and the City of Copenhagen, underscores the urgent need for a multifaceted approach to addressing water challenges. As a small island with a growing population and limited natural water resources, Singapore is in the midst of innovating new solutions to manage its water supply. Already, two-thirds of the city’s land mass is dedicated to water catchment zones to secure freshwater resources but it’s still insufficient. So inland research teams are relying on Nobel Prize knowledge to invent a high-tech filtration system that makes state-of-the-art water processing more energy-efficient than it is currently. But it’s not just the water supply inland that requires new innovations. Singapore requires more land with every passing day and so planners have a bold vision for the Tuas megaport, an ambitious construction project that will build the biggest container port in the world by 2040. We have all seen news about the earthquake in Hualien over the past few days. I offered my condolences to Taichung Mayor Lu Shiow-yen on the disaster when we met during her visit to Singapore. I had an insightful meeting with Mayor Lu and was heartened to hear about the efforts taken by Taichung to advance sustainable development, including progress in pollution control and renewable energy. I was also pleased to share Singapore’s efforts to support the green transition, including initiatives on the carbon tax and carbon market development. As environmental challenges such as climate change intensify, there is much for us to learn from each other. I look forward to more technical exchanges between both sides. 🤝 p/s: Coincidentally, both of us were wearing white the day we met. Italy Makes a Splash at the 10th World Water Forum 🇮🇹 Excited to share insights from the 10th World Water Forum, where Italy made a significant impact with a dedicated pavilion! This space showcased Italy's comprehensive approach to water resources, featuring contributions from: Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) Foreign offices in Hanoi, Tunis, Cairo, and Maputo Water Museum Global Network, CIHEAM Bari, One Water Italian Committee Private companies like Acea, Acquedotto Pugliese, and Veragon Italy's focus? Sustainable water management for all! Their development cooperation efforts target African and Asian countries, including the Middle East. Key areas include: Ensuring water supply during emergencies Enhancing water safety and WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) Building resilience to climate change through improved water management practices A prime example: the "Smart Climate – Sustainable Malawian Agriculture" project, boosting agricultural practices and water management in Malawi. Italy's leadership in water extends beyond its borders. Other key panels were also planned like : Integrated Water Resources Management Water Diplomacy in the Middle East Promoting Water Efficiency in the Nile Valley Italy's comprehensive and multi-faceted approach to water resource management is commendable. By combining efforts from government agencies, foreign offices, institutional partners, and private companies, Italy demonstrates a robust and collaborative model for addressing global water challenges. The focus on emergency water supply, safety, WASH, and climate resilience indicates a holistic strategy that prioritizes both immediate and long-term needs. However, the effectiveness of these initiatives will ultimately depend on continuous collaboration, on-ground implementation, and adaptive strategies to evolving climate and environmental challenges. Italy's engagement at the World Water Forum serves as a valuable example of how coordinated efforts can lead to impactful solutions in the water sector.
