Gas Station Theory - Call for Study Participants: Anecdotal and digital evidence suggests that offenders frequently visit gas stations and convenience stores near crime scenes before and sometimes after committing crimes. To explore this theory further, we are seeking detectives and/or analysts from across the country to participate in a research study. Participants will assist in reviewing or tracking violent crimes (homicides, shootings, robberies, and aggravated assaults) to determine the role of gas station video footage or other evidence in each investigation. Participants have two options: Past Case Review: Analyze violent crimes from the past 6 months to determine if responding officers or detectives requested gas station surveillance footage near crime scenes and if any footage, evidence, or information relevant to the investigation was retrieved. Current Case Tracking: Record similar details for violent crimes that occur over the next 6 months. We will provide a brief 5-question survey or spreadsheet to track the data for each case. Your participation will contribute valuable insights into offender behavior patterns and the potential utility of routinely canvassing nearby gas stations for possible evidence in violent crimes. If you have anecdotal information about a specific case, we welcome that information as well. An introduction to Gas Station Theory will be published later this year in the 4th edition of the International Association of Crime Analysts (IACA) Exploring Crime Analysis textbook, and results of this study may also be published at a later date. Crime scene investigators thoroughly document the crime scene by capturing photographs and taking precise physical measurements. They meticulously identify and gather forensic evidence, ensuring the proper chain of custody for all collected items. This evidence typically includes fingerprints, footprints, tire tracks, blood, various body fluids, hairs, fibers, and remnants from fires. Our colleagues in the Scene of Crime Working Group (SoCWG) specialize in these specific areas. ❓What are their tasks❓ 🔍 to consider the “crime scene” as part of the overall contribution of forensic science to crime investigation and the administration of justice 🔍 to recognise that a broad definition of the “crime scene” needs to be employed that covers the location, collection and interpretation of forensic evidence from suspects and victims as well as places/locations 🔍 to recognise the broad spectrum of interests of police, forensic and law enforcement agencies in effective “crime scene” examination, the involvement and representation on the Working Group will reflect this broad view ❓What are the methodologies and techniques used in crime scene investigation❓ Europol Platform for Experts (EPE) - Crime Scene Website The EPE provides a secure platform for specialists across diverse law enforcement fields, facilitating the sharing of knowledge, best practices and non-personal crime data within their communities. New study shows that real-time crime centres are associated with substantial increases in the chance of a crime being solved, primarily because they can rapidly find and review CCTV video in the early stages of an investigation. Paper: https://lnkd.in/eWw5tkYp Abstract: Amidst recent increases in homicides and shootings in the United States, clearances rates for homicides have declined and nonfatal shooting cases remain notoriously difficult to solve. Considerable research indicates that the outcomes of homicide and shooting investigations are likely influenced by a range of factors, including inherited case characteristics, investigative actions, forensic testing, and agency resources. Recent advancements in technologies available to law enforcement may help fill persistent gaps in solvability, but research remains limited on their effectiveness. RTCCs integrate a variety of technological innovations and software programs to rapidly receive and distribute information to support police operations, and they harness the strong potential to powerfully impact investigative outcomes and offer an additional pathway through which police agencies can increase case clearance. The current study explores the impact of strategic efforts in the Hartford Police Department (HPD) to increase investigative effectiveness through RTCC processes and technologies. Our findings indicate that RTCC activities significantly increase the likelihood that a case is solved, and this effect is primarily due to RTCC analysts’ ability to locate and analyze video associated with the case. When associated video was located, cases were 442% more likely to be solved when controlling for other covariates. The HPD’s RTCC operations, institutionalized technology, and organizational culture also play a crucial role, with a commitment to technology and information-sharing enhancing investigative capabilities. This study emphasizes the effectiveness of real-time crime centers in locating digital evidence, facilitating rapid information dissemination, and fostering agencywide collaboration, ultimately improving investigative outcomes.

I am thrilled to participate in a quiz on Crime Scene Investigation in Fire and Arsons cases. Crime scene investigation in fire and arson cases is a critical process that involves a systematic approach to gather evidence and determine the origin and cause of the fire. The primary goal is to identify the cause of the fire, whether it was accidental or intentional, and to identify any potential suspects. The first step in a crime scene investigation is to secure the scene and ensure the safety of any individuals present. This involves establishing a perimeter around the scene and restricting access to only authorized personnel. This is crucial to prevent contamination of the scene and to ensure the safety of the investigators. Once the scene is secure, investigators will begin to collect evidence. This may include physical evidence such as debris, accelerants, and electrical components, as well as witness statements and surveillance footage. Investigators will also look for signs of arson, such as multiple points of origin or unusual burn patterns. These signs can help to indicate whether the fire was started intentionally or was accidental in nature. Investigators will also interview witnesses and gather statements from anyone who may have seen or heard anything suspicious. This is important as it can provide additional information about the events leading up to the fire and can help to identify potential suspects. They will also review surveillance footage from nearby cameras to see if it captures any suspicious activity. This can provide valuable evidence in identifying potential suspects and can also help to corroborate witness statements. Once all the evidence has been collected, investigators will analyze it to determine the cause of the fire. This may involve sending samples to a laboratory for analysis or using specialized equipment to examine the scene. The analysis of the evidence is crucial in determining the cause of the fire and can help to identify any potential suspects. In cases where arson is suspected, investigators will work to identify potential suspects and gather enough evidence to make an arrest. This may involve comparing witness statements and surveillance footage to identify potential suspects, as well as gathering additional evidence through search warrants or other means. Overall, crime scene investigation in fire and arson cases is a complex and challenging process that requires a great deal of expertise and attention to detail. It is essential to approach each case with a methodical and thorough approach to ensure that all evidence is collected and analyzed properly. #Follow Faith Kerubo.
