Why are so many couples hesitant to talk about undergoing IVF? Today, for couples who are unable to conceive naturally, there is a much higher probability of having children through fertility treatments. However, many couples are not open when it comes to sharing with family and friends that they are undergoing fertility treatments due to several reasons. These include cultural perceptions that connect natural conception with a person’s masculinity and femininity, with men often worrying about social backlash if they are seen as being ‘less virile’. Other reasons include the fear of failure, and myths and misconceptions. When is the right time to start a family? Should I freeze my eggs? For a lot of professionals, especially medics, planning a family can be something we stress about. There can be serious FOMO (fear of missing out) when we see other people our age with children, and we aren't at that stage yet. There are so many reasons why we may not be at this stage yet, and all of these reasons are valid. This is why I'm so grateful for having interviewed Dr Violet Kieu, Fertility Specialist, who answers all of our burning questions! We discuss when we should start thinking about family planning, if we need to freeze our eggs, and so much more. My highlight was the emphasis on the freedom of choice to have kids or to not have kids. Making decisions based on what we truly want, not on FOMO or what we feel we should be doing at our age.
