🍎 It’s your last chance to apply to the Thatchers Community Orchard Project 2025! We’re giving away 500 apple trees to 50 local communities, allowing them to experience the joy of looking after and growing apples in their own orchard. ❣️We believe orchards are special places that have the power to give communities a place to come together, to learn, to share, to connect with nature and reflect on the world around them, all while contributing to biodiversity and creating new habitats for nature. If you’re a charity, group or organisation doing great things for your local community and would benefit from planting, tending to and nurturing 10 delicious apple trees, then we would love to hear from you. 🌳Applications close on 31 Jan 2025, so there is still time! To find out more, see the link in the comments.

Wow - you’ve helped us raise an incredible £26,000 in just 2 weeks! Thanks to your support, we are well on our way to getting the first trees in the ground at Lower Chew Forest before Christmas. 👏💚 Lower Chew Forest will be the largest new woodland in the south west for a generation. It’s a vision with plenty of space for trees and shrubs - in fact we’ve planned for 100,000 of them. This number of native trees, established in appropriate sites chosen by experts, has huge potential for nature, people and the planet. 🌳 But this project goes far beyond simply planting trees. Across this landscape, we intend to integrate miles of nature rich hedgerow, rolling grasslands and precious wetlands to maximise the power of this unique opportunity. Each week of our campaign, we’re revealing more about our plans for Lower Chew Forest and the amazing benefits it will bring for our region. This week, we turn our attention to wonderful wetland habitats. 🐟🌊 Stay tuned for more updates! In the meantime, please keep donating and sharing our crowdfunder to help make this incredible woodland a reality. 👉 https://lnkd.in/ecuMnWgf #AvonNeedsTrees #LowerChewForest #TreePlanting #ClimateAction #WoodlandCreation #HabitatCreation #Wetlands #Biodiversity #TreeForClimate #NatureRecovery #NatureRestoration #Bristol #Bath

🌟 It's the final days of Q2, and Planhat is buzzing with energy and excitement. One of my colleagues is on the verge of closing a major deal. I jokingly told them I'd sacrifice something to send good juju their way. Their response? Inspired by Planhat's latest update, she said "Instead of sacrificing, maybe plant a tree instead..." So I did just that and donated to plant a tree! 🌳 Can I get at least one other person to plant a tree? Let's start growing together! Here are two I recommend: - Arbor Day Foundation - One Tree Planted #Planhat #Q2Success #PlantATree

‘If you stand still in the forest, you can feel a heartbeat’ A nature sanctuary is not a short-term project. The effort to preserve and enhance Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari is, by definition, a very very long-term mission. It is a place that is saving species and bringing joy to people, and will do for centuries to come. It is literally a commitment that is as close to ‘forever’ as any that can be made by humans. Such an undertaking therefore requires financial solutions that will provide support far beyond the usual horizons of conservation funding. Which is why the Maungatautari Ecological Island Trust has established the Maungatautari Sanctuary Nest Egg Fund at Momentum Waikato, the region’s community foundation. This is an endowment that welcomes public donations and provides investment income into the future, for the crucial bio-diversity endeavours upon this beautiful forested peak. The government is committed to increasing #biodiversity, planting 1,000s of #trees and ensuring everyone in England lives within 15 minutes of a green or blue space. And yet... communities trying to green #neighbourhoods face huge difficulties. Why is this? Could #policy be getting in the way instead of helping? To test this theory, this week the Town and Country Planning Association (TCPA) invited colleagues from government departments and agencies with relevant policy responsibilities, charities, councils, academics and others to map all the policies relevant to #GreenInfrastructure (using the office floor as a very low-tech Miro board - see photo, below). The complexity of what we found was mind-boggling. There is no clear line of sight linking national objectives with local action. And little to ensure that local greening initiatives contribute to the bigger national picture - to the extent that it appears that trees planted by #communities aren't even counted towards national tree-planting targets. How dispiriting. Many people want to create a greener, healthier country - better policy co-ordination could help transform fragmented local initiatives into a nation-wide effort to achieve this, harnessing local enthusiasm. Huge thanks to the many colleagues (too many to name) who contributed - and to Felicity Mallam and TESSA TRICKS at Wates Family Enterprise Trust for funding. Lots of food for thought...

It's that time of year to give thanks and focus on what is important to you, your family, and your community. How do you show support for what you care about, and how do you give thanks? Join a board? Donate funds? Volunteer? If you are interested in or care about your local open spaces, scenic vistas, and natural resources, please consider supporting your local non-profit land trust. Their work is often out of the spotlight but is critical to the character and health of our local communities. If you don't know which land trust is in your area, you can use this great tool to find out! https://lnkd.in/gzRFaC2U
