Great time yesterday evening at the ‘DE&I should Die?’ event hosted by Aon as part of the #DiveIn2024 festival If you’ve not been to this festival it is the leading global event exploring DE&I issues within the Insurance sector and well worth accessing. Check out the 2023 video below for a taster! I particularly enjoyed yesterday evening’s topic and the approach they took. With DE&I , I often feel there is a risk we are ‘preaching to the already converted’- as those who turn up in room are probably not the ones who need convincing. This evening’s topic took the form of a 4 part debate a la Harris/Trump with rivals sides arguing why we should care about key DE&I topics- and the opposing side arguing why we should not. The business case for DE&I, the impact of Gender Pay Gap reporting and inclusive hiring all came under the microscope. Whilst i enjoying hearing the ‘why we should continue’ arguments I found the ‘why we shouldn’t’ so powerful to hear. We all know we operate in echo chambers- especially on such emotive topics as DE&I. But how can we bust out of these honestly? Hearing thought process that I suspect many are having (privately?) conveyed persuasively and insightfully made me stop, question and consider my own implicit biases. Great arbitration by the SME panel too so thanks to Dr Julie Humphreys FCIPD, Rob Anarfi, Rukasana Bhaijee and the hosts and legal team presenting the arguments. If we really want to live diversity - actively opening ourselves up to the alternative perspective is key. Tomorrow, well, Monday for the majority of Generali users, sees the launch of our new underwriting platform, AGORA. Being involved in a multi-country project has been an incredible journey that truly exemplifies the power of global collaboration. From my perspective, it has showcased the importance of cross-border teamwork in today's interconnected world. Working across borders presents its unique set of challenges - time zone differences, language barriers, and varying cultural norms (and that is speaking as an Aussie, living and working in the UK). These challenges have only fueled the project team's determination to succeed and have ultimately strengthened the project delivery. One key lesson learned is the significance of clear communication and transparency. Regular Teams meetings, the availability of supporting documentation, and fostering a culture of respect for diverse perspectives have been instrumental in overcoming obstacles and driving progress forward. The opportunity to bring the various platform champions together in Madrid in October last year certainly assisted in obtaining clarity, a sense of direction, and the desire to succeed (as mentioned many times by Matt, the success is now down to you!!). As we continue to navigate the complexities of this multi-country project, I am continually impressed by the dedication and talent of project team leaders, Matthew Richardson, Melissa Boyars, and Antonio Oliveri (Yes, there are others, but these three have been at the forefront, cajoling, encouraging and supporting the country champions along the way). Whilst each country has its own AGORA platform champion, I know I would not have been able to contribute fully without the assistance of Gilles Meier and Terry Chamberlain in the UK. If, for nothing else, helping keep my sanity, these two have provided much needed input from business and IT perspectives. Together, we are proving that distance is no match for a shared vision and a commitment to excellence. #InternationalCollaboration #Innovation #GlobalTeamwork
