Understanding the nuances of mental health interventions is crucial, especially when addressing the diverse needs of Youth and Young Adults of Color. 👇🏾 Research consistently underscores the effectiveness of culturally tailored mental health interventions in improving outcomes within this demographic. By incorporating culturally sensitive approaches, practitioners can establish a more meaningful connection with their clients, fostering trust and enhancing the therapeutic process. This is even more important when we consider the fact that 42% of Youth of Color reported exposure to at least one source of racial trauma, such as interactions with police, teachers and employers. Essentially, adults in positions of authority. Advocating for and implementing diversity in mental health support is a huge part of what we do here at The AAKOMA Project. It is paramount to ensuring that every individual, irrespective of their cultural background, receives the tailored care they require. #CulturalCompetence #MentalHealthInterventions

Today, we observe World Mental Health Day, an international day for global mental health education, awareness, and advocacy against social stigma. This day was first celebrated in 1992 at the initiative of the World Federation for Mental Health, a global mental health organization with members and contacts in more than 150 countries. Did you know that almost one billion people are estimated to be living with a mental disorder? Mental, neurological, and substance-use disorders account for 10% of the global burden of disease. People with severe mental disorders tend to die 10 to 20 years earlier than the general population. On this day, let’s unite to raise awareness of mental health issues around the world and mobilize efforts in support of mental health. Join us in advocating for mental health education, reducing stigma, and making mental health care a reality for people worldwide4. #WorldMentalHealthDay #MentalHealthAwareness #EndTheStigma

Adolescents’ voices on self-engagement in mental health treatment: a scoping review by Nina Therese Øversveen Svamo et al. just published online in #ECAP: https://lnkd.in/eS4b7aeG According to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, adolescents’ involvement in their healthcare is a fundamental right, and self-engagement in mental health treatment is vital for realizing their potential within person-centered care (PCC). Research exists that highlights barriers to involving adolescents in their care decisions. However, research on adolescents’ own voices about self-engagement in mental health treatment has been scarce. This scoping review aimed to examine and summarize current knowledge on adolescents’ voices regarding self-engagement in mental health treatment. #mentalhealth #mentalhealthtreatment #youthmentalhealth

an important consultation... do share & get your thoughts in
📣Public Consultation📣 The Mental Health Commission is currently developing guidance for staff working in mental health services on the care and treatment of LGBTQIA+ service users. The purpose of this survey is to help the MHC to identify key areas that the new guidance for staff should address. As part of this consultation, we would like to hear from all relevant stakeholders. We especially want to hear from LGBTQIA+ people who have direct experience of using mental health services in Ireland, those close to them, and staff who have provided mental health care to LGBTQIA+ people. We will carefully assess all survey responses received and use the information gathered, along with other available evidence, to develop the guidance document. As we transition from April's Second Chance Month to May's Mental Health Awareness Month, it's crucial to focus on the specific mental health challenges faced by formerly incarcerated individuals reentering society. These individuals often encounter significant mental health strains due to societal stigmatization and the systemic barriers that complicate their reintegration. Effective support for them goes beyond mere job placement; it must include access to mental health services that address the trauma and stress of reentry. The narrative of "second chances" frequently overlooks these mental health needs, which are essential for true rehabilitation and successful reintegration. As a large portion of the underserved communities we serve are also considered "second chance" individuals, The Urban Pinnacle (TUP) recognizes these challenges and integrates mental health support into its holistic approach to empower these individuals genuinely, aiming to provide not just skills and jobs but also the emotional and psychological support necessary to navigate their new realities post-incarceration. #MentalHealthAwareness #SecondChanceAtMentalHealth

Frequently, I have this difficulty in coming with hashtags and captions- maybe I spent my time academically. Sometimes, What really makes me anxious is the fact of how mental health is seen as a service. No it is professional work, two, quantity matters less than quality. Three, fellow psychologists narrowing their focus or hyperbolizing mental health to sound it like an advocacy. (For this, couple session and family therapy helps and other programs involving society at large. These foster rehabilitative, reintergrative and educative sessions at large). four, discipline- it may sound conventional but I disagree- this is about being informed in what you promote. No offense to mental health advocates out here. I respect you. What I'm saying is, everyone have collective responsibility and mental health profession, unlike other professions is not alienated from society. Apologies if post hurts someone. #communitymentalhealth #familytherapist #advocacy #earlyinterventionforchildren

The new WAPR bulletin on global perspectives on youth mental health is out💫 The current issue focuses on mental health issues of youth, how to best support and provide services. Prioritizing the mental health needs of this demographic is crucial, especially in periods where youth voices struggle to be heard. Additionally, the bulletin features a section dedicated to human rights, showcasing examples of advancements in services and communities on a global scale, such as the WHO #QualityRights e-training. I had the honor to contribute to the bulletin with an article on mental health needs of children and adolescents and the need to better address the transition gap between children and adolescents mental health services and adult mental health services. Have a good read!
