Stanford University's 2024 AI Index Report, here are a few key points. Well worth a read, but being 500 pages long it may take a few sittings. 1. AI now matches or exceeds human capabilities in tasks like image classification and language understanding, yet struggles with complex areas such as advanced math and planning. 2. The private sector leads AI innovation, producing 51 machine learning models in 2023, with industry-academia partnerships also peaking at 21 models. 3. Training costs for cutting-edge AI models are climbing, exemplified by OpenAI's GPT-4 at $78 million and Google's Gemini Ultra at $191 million. 4. The U.S. maintains its lead in AI development and investment, with 61 significant AI models developed in 2023, ahead of the EU and China. 5. There's a notable lack of uniform standards in reporting the risks of AI models among leading developers, complicating risk assessments. 6. Despite a dip in overall AI investment, funding for generative AI technologies has seen a dramatic increase, reaching $25.2 billion. 7. AI is credited with boosting productivity and bridging skill gaps in the workforce, though there are concerns about potential drops in performance without proper oversight. 8. AI is pushing forward scientific discovery, notably in algorithmic sorting and new materials development. 9. AI-related regulations in the U.S. grew by 56% over the past year, reflecting heightened legislative attention. 10. Public awareness and concern about AI’s societal impacts are rising, with a significant increase in Americans feeling more concerned than excited about AI technologies.

"The human-centered framework is anchored in a shared commitment that AI should improve the human condition—and it consists of concentric rings of #responsibility and impact, from individuals to community to society as a whole." #Trustworthiness is an empirical phenomenon. The shared commitment should be in learning about uses of AI by oneself, by others, and with others. Attention to context of use will be as important as attention to outputs in this empirical learning. Different perspectives will be important in this collaborative learning. "The difference between those who understand how to use AI and those who do not is going to have extremely profound downstream effects... the public sector is what the public should be able to trust when there is a need to assess, evaluate, or explain something." #Transparency of AI anaytics will be required if our collective resources are to serve this role. Trustworthiness of this empirical process obviates the need for blind trust. Fiduciary duty, discretion, trust, and loyalty of civil servants and their agencies in this role would be fostered by being a clearinghouse for citizen science on the uses (and misuses) of AI. Again, it will be important for transparency in methods of selection, evaluation, and promulgation of lessons learned. "Computers embody our values. But humans have the ability to #love and feel #compassion. Right now, it’s not clear there is a mathematical path toward that." Observations of love and compassion, and representations about it, can benefit from #expertise just as in any other field of human endeavor. This expertise is not going to come from the physical or computational sciences, nor is it limited to the social and behavioral sciences. Again, utilization of expertise as such requires empirical evidence of its trustworthiness rather than blind trust.
For her pioneering work in computer vision and image recognition, Fei-Fei Li has been called the "godmother of AI." In an interview for Issues in Science and Technology, Li discusses what it means to develop human-centered AI, the ethical responsibilities of AI scientists and developers, and whether there are limits to the human qualities AI can attain.
