Great tip about highlighting long term projects to demonstrate one’s ability for resilience. This is what I recommend to my high school students no matter what meandering life path they choose. It is great to try different STEM clubs, sports, fine arts to find your personal affinity, but stick with something to illustrate the ability to see the goals actualized. For example, an Eagle Scout receives a pay upgrade in the military because it takes years to accomplish this achievement. Many 4-H All Stars receive scholarships because it demonstrates years of commitment to their club and their community. Long term achievements say a lot more than spending a few weeks in a high school French Club without taking on a leadership role. Take up a task as a leader and grow in the position over a period of years. If it is time for a new chapter in your life, great! However, go boldly into that new chapter with the experience being a Treasurer/Secretary/Vice President/President/Committe Chair for a high school STEM club or Captain of the sports team for four years instead of aimlessly hanging out as a regular member without personally accomplishing anything.

DEVCOM Soldier Center event introduces female students to their potential STEM DESTINY. NATICK, Mass. – Could a rewarding career in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, or STEM, be their DESTINY? That’s what local female high school students came to find out at the Discover Engineering, Science, Technology in You, or DESTINY, event hosted recently by the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command Soldier Center, or DEVCOM SC. During the event, local female high school students learned about STEM career opportunities, internships, and scholarships. Students also learned about DEVCOM SC’s work to optimize Soldier performance and to provide warfighters with the very best products and solutions that science and technology can offer. The SciAI Center is stacked: launched by Cornell Engineering with funding from the Office of Naval Research, members also include 50 faculty members, postdocs, and doctoral students at UC Berkeley, Brown, CalTech, U. of Cambridge, UC Santa Cruz, the United States Naval Academy (BEAT ARMY!) — and now Pasteur Labs!
