In February 2024, we surveyed our membership, seeking to understand their experiences of learner engagement, participation and behaviour in a post-pandemic world. In response to our survey results, we partnered with behaviour expert Paul Dix and his team at When The Adults Change, to reflect on how, as student support services in colleges, we can play a pivotal role in harnessing relational practice, nurturing and developing deep trust, empathy and high standards. We're ending the week with another one of our 2024 Innovation Award winners 💡 The professional development programme by Zukunft trotz Handicap e.V. from Germany was one of the five practices that stood out to our independent jury. Listen to Melika Ahmetovic, Vice-chairperson of Zukunft trotz Handicap e.V., explain their vocational training programmes for people with disabilities in childcare and gastronomy 👨👦👩🍳 These sectors face a high demand for skilled workers and are increasingly receptive to innovative approaches to meeting this demand. The professional development programmes offer invaluable support to skilled labour in these domains, recognising the value that persons with intellectual disabilities and autism bring to the workplace when positioned and supported appropriately. The Event That Never Happened . . . I still remember it like it was yesterday. The thrill of planning my first-ever SRC Week event as a new member of the committee. Weeks of missing classes for meetings, brainstorming, and #stakeholderengagement. . . We were determined to make it a success. Just as we were about to execute our plan, the #COVID-19 lockdown hit. And just like that, the event was canceled. . . I was heartbroken.💔 This was my first (big thing) #project. The first-ever record event to be held in the University's history. I had poured my heart and soul into it. We wanted to deliver and set the foundation. But life had other plans. . . Looking back, I realize that you may not have everything work out as planned. But every event is an opportunity to learn and grow. We may not have had the event, but I gained valuable experience in 📍#teamwork, 📍#problemsolving, 📍and #adaptability. ________ Moreover, we managed to pull off a peaceful and successful election. ________ What were your heartbroken moments during LOCKDOWN? ________ . . . #SRCWeekcelebration #Studentleadership #Elevateyourprofessionalpresencewith_Amaka Amaka Ifeduba

I had thought about it for years. Perhaps a half dozen or so ESL teachers had told me older newcomers (kids 17 and up) were being turned away from their schools. I knew this was plausible: I’d already written a book on the topic. But how could I determine whether this was happening on a large scale? How could I connect with hundreds of newcomer kids and convince them to share their contact info as they navigate life in a new country in one of the most stressful and transient periods of their lives? How would I even find these folks? Stand at a random border crossing and flag down every new entrant who appeared to be of high-school age? My book, The School I Deserve, (Beacon Press, 2021), told the story of six would-be students who reluctantly sued their Pennsylvania school district for unlawfully turning them away. But that was just one district. I wanted to know if this was happening nationwide. I thought about applying for another fellowship, maybe enlisting the help of graduate students. But what would they do? How would it be different than what I could do alone? Finally, I decided to call two Long Island school districts — I grew up on LI and worked as an education reporter for Newsday for five years — to see if they would admit a 19-year-old Venezuelan who had missed some schooling back home. I had reported extensively on one of the districts for Newsday: It made headlines for turning away similarly-aged kids. That district’s registration page, as of this writing, still includes a chunky paragraph on how to report an enrollment violation. Surely, I thought, it learned its lesson: There was no way it would do this again. I was wrong. It turned down my student in seconds. The other district, the one I picked at random, also rejected him. The woman who answered my call at the second location said she had already received many such requests from similarly aged kids in prior months and the answer was always the same: No. “It’s so sad,” she said. “Yes, it is,” I thought. And that’s how this project was born. I am asking you to please donate to The 74 Media to fund investigations like this one. I have worked for many big-name news organizations, including The New York Times, Chicago Tribune and Newsday. All were excellent but I doubt any would have allowed me to spend more than 18 months on a single story — even one with as big a pay-off as this one: 13 states and three major cities have pledged to strengthen newcomer students’ rights after our investigation revealed rampant, coast-to-coast enrollment discrimination. And none of those organizations has editor Kathy Moore. She is no doubt one of the very best in the business. A smart, thoughtful, innovative and decisive problem-solver, she was instrumental in bringing this story to life. Work like this is only possible through donations from readers like you.
